Hey all, just wondering if anyone has ever applied for the Casual Work positions at the Royal Mail. I applied for a sorting office position a few weeks ago and have to attend some form of registration event in the next few days. Im just curious if anyone else has done it and if so what should I expect.

*Await's strike comments ;)*

I applied for the same thing, the cheeky buggers at the agency told me to cut my hair first! :p

PMSL :D

Did you attend the Registration event?

If so could I add you to MSN to ask a few ?'s

I have actually, gotta go in on the 1st November... let me know what sort of things they want to know etc. so I can do well ;)

There is one of these in Plymouth, few people I know have done it. You basically have to sit at a computer terminal and view photographs of items of mail which the auto scanners didnt recognise. Then you type the address into the computer.

Thats really it, thats all you do. You have to do a min of 20 hours, 5x4 hour shifts IIRC.

Would drive me insane. Retail is a little more fun over Christmas, although still not great.

Sounds like a good idea... I need a temp job so this could be ideal!
What exactly is involved?

General sorting of mail. Infact hold on...

You'll need to be:

Punctual and reliable
Able to work to tight deadlines
Flexible and adaptable as you are likely to undertake several different tasks in one shift
Able to lift and carry mailbags and boxes weighing up to 11kg and to push containers weighing up to 250kg
Able to stand for long periods of time
So if this sounds like something you’re interested in and you want to help make this Christmas a success for Royal Mail and its customers then follow the link below to apply

I have various expensive things coming up so I need this extra cash injection :p . I.E Car Insurance

Yea I heard of this one as well but the position I have applied for is more of the sorting side of things in the Mail Centre it's self. Hey it might drive me mad but as an 18 year old student I'll work for peanuts :D

I believe one of my mates has applied for this.

Not sure when his registration thingy is.

I shall have to ask...

I love how you have to print these off, they don't trust themselves to post it to you :p

Yea :D

What do you plan to wear to this "Event" im not even sure it's formal so I don't think I will need formal wear. I was planning on wearing smart jeans and a shirt what about your self?

Trousers and a shirt, probably. Jeans if I get some before I go :/

I don't have any decent trousers, being a student I only have casual wear :(:p, I hope they don't mind, I understand it is an informal event so I don't think it will matter?

worked there for almost a year

You only get that fun job, if you can type fast (which i was doing). If you can't type above a certain speed you simply draw a red box around *** address. Thats even more boring.

Most of the time you just have to type the postcode in and it will get the address.
