I've got a few days off following the completion of my exams and fancy filling my time with some gaming. However, I've exhausted my library and have no idea what to play. Can anyone recommend an atmospheric rpg with a well written story, deep and meaningful characters and preferably decent graphics?

I've already played all of the Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, Witcher, Deus Ex and Dragon Age games, together with Kingdom Come Deliverance, Vampire Redemption and Vampyr. I'm sure there's something else out there worth playing though. Recommendations greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Pillars of Eternity Series
Baldur's Gate Series
Icewind Dale
Divinity Original Sin Series

You probably don't need to look any further than Pillars of Eternity for all of that. Although most of the RPGs that you've mentioned aren't party-based top-down RPGs. Is that your thing or are you after a first / 3rd person RPG?

Pillars of Eternity, I think the 2nd game has improved on it immeasurably, if you want to skip the first you can as there is an introduction sequence that fills in the gaps (and you can read around any other areas).

I suppose if he doesnt like the top down party games.....my recommendations are all out of the question.

Icewind dale he can probably miss because the story is pretty forgettable, but BG is a must.

Grim Dawn - Great aRPG, can be had for buttons. 7/10
Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor - Martyr - Another aRPG that's quite tough, has tons and tons of depth, crafting and grinding. 7.8/10
Divinity Original Sin 2 - Stunning game. 9/10

Assassins Creed Origins - This is probably GOTY, if you like your Witcher type gameplay this is right up your street. The game world is humongous, the story is great but visually there's nothing like it. 9.8/10

I just purchased this today, I havent tried it yet. I was a little edgy on pulling the trigger so I watched review after review after review to see if it was my cup of tea

Thanks for the recommendations. I don't mind top-down games. The only thing I'm not keen on is turn based / tactical combat. In fact, it was the combat system that put me off the Divinity series. I should have added; I've played all the AC and Dark Souls games as well.

In the 3d vein, some alternatives to consider may be:

Dragon's Dogma - Dark Arisen
Final Fantasy XV
Kingdoms of Amular: Reckoning

The first is a Japanese attempt at a Western-style RPG, the second is a JRPG and the third (from 2012) is more akin to Dragon Age and despite poor sales making a sequel unlikely, it is still rated by many I believe (perhaps a 'cult' following).

Just off the top of my head.

@Pighardia knows a RPG or two...

Pillars of Eternity isn't turn-based so that's definitely one to have a look at :)

I've just bought the GOG version of Pillars of Eternity 2:) I watched a few recap videos on youtube first, having not played the original. Looks good.

@Rifte : Don't forget that you can always refund if purchased on steam before 2 hours played. The game does take a bit of getting into before things get meaty.

I suspect you've already played it, but KoTOR 1 & 2 fit the parameters, particularly the first one. The visuals whilst dated hold up better than many games from the same era, and there are some decent texture packs around.

I've not played them but how about:

Alpha Protocol
Arx Fatalis

Oh & perhaps Mars: War Logs - I was quite enjoying this until I did my usual & got distracted by something else:P
