RR7 has 5GB install

'm pretty sure the hard drive is non-removable. Unlike the 360 which lets you stick the hard drive on the side the PS3's harddrive is internal.

If you're prepated to invalidate the warranty and open it up you *may* be able to swap hard drives but this has yet to be proven.

It is a slot on the side of the PS3, like in some Laptops. You can use a any 2.5 inch SATA drive.

I don't know how much these cost. But because you can buy your own it is cheaper. Hard dive prices drop each year, but the MS 20gb HD is still £69.99 rrp.

Ahh, ok I didn't realise. That's excellent tbh.

Well if the developers don't get lazy like the examples above, this could be a good feature. Nothing worse than having to wait for ages for things to load on games that you play the most. Ninja Gaiden on the xbox had long loading times which put me off at times (still was my favourite game but if I had the chance to install it so it loaded quicker, I would)

to be honest if when i first buy a ps3 game it asks me weather i want to wait 5 mins the first time i insert it so i can get 3 second loads or weather to play straight away i`ll take the 5 mins any time. I hate long loading times especialy if they happen a lot dead rising is an example i hate the loading times on that ok yeah the games still great but i dont feel the need to have to sit through a 15-20 second wait everytime I enter a new area.

yet again blame Blu-Ray, why, why, why, why did Sony ever put this in the console, if it wasn't in you'd be playing the ps3 now and at a much cheaper price.New tech is not always better!

People would undoubtedly have complained about the load times, Sony give you the OPTION to create a cache to improve this and this is a bad thing?

The point is that it should be quick to start with, you shouldn't have to decide yourself that you want it to be quick.

hmm the point is relative - is it Quicker or slower to use the HDD, its quicker, therefore its worth it.

if you wanted a solid state console with no loading times to speak of, i have no doubt it would be possible, but the cost to the end user would be even more horrific.

PC games will not really see this as an issue. they do this already. But this is not a PC it is a games console. They should be developing a games machine that is easy to use and you can simply put the game in and play. Not put the game in and wait 20 min for an install.

Quicker once it's installed yes, but consoles are supposed to be 'put the disc in and play' :(

I imagine something will pop up saying "game cache not installed on this PS3, would you like to wait for an installation of this game (approx 5 mins) to speed up load times or do you want to play straightaway"

Obviously, worded a bit better!!

Sounds like a simple question with one of 2 answers. Can't see most people caring much or being confused tbh.

Xbox1 used its harddrive for caching, no-one complained, if anything it was applauded.

The only issue is how much space each game uses. But this is still a benefit. Xbox360 can not offer now as only 1 SKU has a HDD whereas PS3 has it on both SKUs.

Well, I'm sure I read somewhere that the load times were comparable to a PSP (though Sony tried to advertise it as a positive thing!) so if thats true, I'll definitely be installing my games.

Yes but with the Xbox it was transparent, it wasn't noticeable to the gamer. A 5 gig install would be very noticeable.

The point is that the blueray drives are slow and the caching can't be hidden from the user, especially with 5gig of data to cache.

The Xbox1's DVD-Rom was no slouch.

It's also that you have to manually go in and uninstall games. I don;t want to be in a position where I'm looking at install size on the back of the box and thinking what should I take off my "console" so I can play it.

Patches were a first bad "feature" copied from PC gaming. Installing is another step backwards.

I have two concerns moving forward from this.

1) If sonys predictions are correct, games are set to grow significantly. If this is the case then surely the installs will grow too. There may be a point when the 20gb HDD is not big enough for 2 games to be run simultaneously. or worse one game may not fit at all.

2) Sony are not unknown for their draconian DRM this could be used in the future to lock games to a console (in conjunction with an internet connection).
