RSS Feeds - is it as simple as it seems?

Hi all,

Never done anything with RSS feeds before, but a client of mine is after one for their site.

After doing some online reading it appears to just be an XML file... is it really that simple? Is there anything needed to announce that an update has been made, or does the RSS client simply check for updates at set intervals?

it's Really [that] Simple Syndication (sorry, that was lame!)

you don't have to do anything other than change your file - the readers do the rest (all they really do is recheck the file at a defined interval to see if it's changed)

I've never really looked into RSS feeds either. Are they essentially news in ones browser updated via "feeds" which are just downloaded xml files?
