RT-N66U Really slow on wifi, best settings?

That's the one.

As you are moving between SDKs make sure you do a factory reset after flashing otherwise you don't get the benefit and certain low level settings won't be overwritten.

Also I have a mix of Apple and Windows (as well as Android) 'phones and PCs at home and this works fine with them (Apple devices can be a pain on the N66U on certain firmwares).

Factory reset as in Pin it for 15 seconds after flashing

No need to do that on a N66U. You can do it from inside the web UI. It is under Administration > Restore/Save/Upload setting. At least on my firmware. Accomplishes the same thing.

Ah I was aware you can do it on most if not all routers but thought it was a no no, however in this case it's not a fault where something is actually broken more not performing as well as could be expected

Will backup and restore post flash >> hard reset in that case

Thanks for the links and info ;)

No worries. The 30/30/30 thing and hard resets via reset button or power button are more of a Tomato thing. Not Asus.

Merlin doesn't advise restoring from a saved configuration by the way when moving between major versions. Manual reconfiguration is what is recommended, A pain I know from experience.

So I do need to manually reconfigure

True to a point. The main vulnerabilities come from AiCloud, and additional Asus added functionality. Not really through the core functions of the router.

Discusses this.

And I think this is the most illustrative thread where I think Merlin had just had enough of this whole discussion (and possibly the one you are referring to) :)

In the end it goes without saying that if you are using an older firmware, bugfixes made after its submission won't be included, if this impacts on what you use the router for then you have to make a decison.

I made the choice to run an older firmware as the gains outweighed the risks (in my particular circumstance) and in home router terms the N66U is getting on a little. I hope to upgrade to a AC87U just a soon as I can justify the cost.

In closing, see this link for a changelog of various fixes included in "just" the Rmerlin builds, he's a busy guy. At least Asus/Rmerlin regularly patch this kit unlike other manufacturers *cough* Netgear *cough* ;) Though that has changed a little.

Ended up just using the latest firmware

So far so good, Internet definitely seems snappy loading pages and pictures on the iPhone and signal all around the house is strong and stable

Fingers crossed :)

Not happy with this firmware my initial experience was a good one but after using it for a few more hours and this morning I'm not too sure, will maybe try an older version to see how that performs
