RTS games for a begineer...

As a fellow RTS noob - I would say Warcraft 3 - classic game, easy to get into with a great campaign and addon pack if you want more.

Should you decide to go online at some point, DOTA (defence of the ancients) is a super addictive mode for it.

Supreme Commander is same thing, except the games last forever, and require patience.

Not really, a good player is at T3 by 15 minutes and is churning out experimentals by the 25 minute mark...depending on map. Sorian's AI mod is excellent and it even probes specific weak spots (for example, it dropped T3 bots at the back of my base, and only nuked units that weren't under SMD cover).

Of course it does require practice, but thats what Sandbox and the default fodder AIs are for ;)

Company of heroes great game, and about it running on laptops, i ran it on a pentium 2.6ghz and ati 9550 when it was released and play 40+fps on low and still looked great.

Surprised no one has mentioned World In Conflict, i think its brilliant!

Wasn't that impressed with Red Alert 3 but i still play it as can be fun at times, C&C 3 Tiberium Wars/Kanes Wrath are pretty decent too.

Haven't played COH/OF yet but look to be very good also

I'd start with the Command & Conquer series. The games are generally a lot of fun and VERY noob-friendly.

Go for Red Alert 3 or Tiberium Wars and see how you get on with it. :)

C&C series is great right up until red alert 3...probably not the best one to start at.

its ok but nowhere near as good as their previous games.

Why am I so unbeliveable bad at RTS games online? CS:S i'm always within top 3, even when I first started it I was never bottom. Same with most other FPS's. Driving games the same.

However RTS's I suck so, so bad that I find little point even playing, I always think "wow I'm building a MASSIVE army here, no chance he's gonna win" then about 2 minutes later he comes in with an army 10 times the size of mine and slaughters me without a chance!

CoH is greatest RTS ever, even better than starcraft back in the day, it is noob friendly but also very complex, but a lot of the more complex details you dont need to be aware about to be play it at first. I found the campaign very good as it teaches you how to play throughout it, gradually introducing more units.

The original Starcraft and Brood war, while I would say are a bit "meh" by now days standards on-line, but they are REALLY easy to get into and will run on pretty much anything. plus it had a damn awesome story line and three very different races.

Yep agree with all of that, you have to play the campaign missions to start with just to get to grips with it. I've recommended it to a couple of my mates and they just dived into the skirmishes and online play and swiftly gave up as they had no idea what the hell they were doing. One of them has since given the campaign missions a go and has found out he now really likes it

Used to happen to me on AOE 2, then I realised whilst I was making military units, my opponents were gathering resources that would allowed very swift army creation later.
