Looking for something that I can spend hours playing.....

LOVED homeworld, really enjoyed COH, enjoyed Evil Genius too.

Been looking at Sins of a Solar Empire or Universe at War or something like Black and White 2 but am open to anything that's good and absorbing....

So... What do you suggest or have you played the above and what did you think??

Cheers

Try X3 - Ideally Terran Conflict. That can suck up weeks without much effort :p
Currently playing it with a few mods, its nice :)

Another vote for X3. Once you get the hang of it, you can go for months. I'm looking forward to after exams when I can just settle right back into my 5 hours a day of SETAing.

what mods do you suggest?

Also any good gfx mods for uber eye candy?

Terran confict doent need uber eye candy mods :D its uber enough as it is.

If its your first time playing you are better off starting without any mods.

Is a decent joystick an absolute must for X3 games?

Really enjoy my space sims but never got into X3 as I keep hearing the learning curve is chuffing vertical.

You can play it with KB+mouse but i would recommend a joystick, play it the way its ment to be played.

Yes the learning curve is very steep, but the basics aren’t hard to learn and there are plenty of beginners guides.

I personally play with mouse and keyboard. I've got used to it like that now, switching between a mouse and a joystick would get annoying.
I'm using the following mod scripts:

Bribe a Pilot
Cheat Collection Package (I don't out and out cheat though :p)
Community Plugin Configuration
Khaak Invasions
Race Patrols
NPC Bailing Addon
Salvage Claim Software MK1
Nanite Hull Repair
Improved Boarding (not really tried this yet but here its great for capturing capital ships)

This combination results in you often finding huge battles between races, often against the Xenon and Khaak. But I have seen some huge battles against Pirates too (I really want the Pirate Destroyer!) The Bailing and Salvage claim mean you'll often find abandoned ships around battles and can claim them easily and sell them.
Generally the game is a bit more combat focused and you get new ships easier - I didn't want to grind for days before getting a good ship :p

Currently most of my fleet are M6 and M3. Recently got the Terran Springblossem and Vidar. But I still fly a Dragon as my main ship :)
Always calling my Cerberus M7 in for heavy support, its awesome - A destroyer will just be immense though.

Why pilot the dragon the springblossom is the best M6 in the game?

Get rid of the Cerberus its the worst M7 in the game. Try out a Shrike for capital killing or a Panther if you want a mini carrier.

The Dragon looks nice :)
I currently haven't got nice weaponry for the Springblossom, with it being so fast I feel it is overpowered anyway. Today I've been flying a Hyperion that I capped with Marines earlier :D (my first cap. currently trying to capture a Ryu but the Marines are being stupid and not even flying towards it :()

I saw someone on a X3 forum saying the Cerberus is the worst, But I can't see why. I've got flak mounted all over it so it rips M3's to shreds which saves me chasing after them in my M6, and has huge front firepower. What does the Shrike offer over it? (originally I probably would have bought a Split Tiger since they look awesome and were great in X3:XTM - but didn't have anywhere near enough Rep)

You might think the Cerberus is good but compaired to the compitition its rubbish. Its under shielded only 3x1gj and cannot mount any anti capital weapons in the front.

What makes the Shrike so good is that it can mount gause cannons in the left and right turret, both turrets can fire forward at the same time. 4x GC's will rip thru any capital ship in seconds with no energy loss.

Just placed an order for a Saitek Cyborg Evo Wireless from OcUK and managed to find a copy of X3: Terran Conflict on the interweb :)

Should be playing this by the end of the week... woo :D

Welcome to the X Series fan club (check out the egosoft forums, if you need to know anything)

Nice choice on the joystick :D ive got one and wouldnt use a wired joystick ever again. Only complaint i do have is the location of the throttle is just wrong.

Oh and dont forget to patch up the game to the latest version 2.0a

Cheers

I've dabbled with X3 before so I'm not a total newbie but really haven't played it for more than a few hours after borrowing it off a friend.

Quite looking forward to getting back into Space-Sims... I'm an absolutely huge Freelancer fan - I loved that game to bits :)

I wouldn't bother with universe at war, it is a terrible game, very unbalanced, really buggy and generally a bad RTS. Saying that I did get my copy for £2.50 - 10% so I can't complain really.
