As mentioned above Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Complete Pack on sale atm on steam. Could also wait for the steam summer sale to pick-up shogun 2 and other total war games cheap.

The Homeworld games are superb, and that's coming from someone who isn't usually a fan of RTS games. They're quite old now, but the storylines are quite good and they still play well.

Wouldn't really class Warhammer as a RTS. But Total war games are epic! :cool:
 
Why are people mentioning total war games? i am not very good when it comes to strategy games yet i thought i would give Napoleon: Total war a try and wow, i found it so complicated it wasn't even funny, having to manage taxes, stop riots, repair buildings pay allies, trade etc is didn't have an easy learning curve at all which is what the op wants. having said that im just a bit numb when it comes to strategy though i tend to do something and watch the charecters do as i command all while im being attacked somewhere else and i dont realise until its too late lol.

Starcraft 2 i have tried and got obliterated by so called novices it puts you against in multiplayer and the whole different faction and units is confusing i find.

games i recommend are
Company of heroes currently £6 on amazon for the anthology. very good game win or lose online and its WW2 setting what's not to like about that?.
RUSE, very easy to get into and to learn and has an easy layout for your buildings etc, can be very tough online though as not many novices still play it.

Was just reading through the whole post hoping someone had already corrected this.

Civ 5 is the same as the others, a turn based strategy game.

I always wanted to get the original Civ 1 again. I remember being 14 years old and getting my first IBM-PC computer game. I so desperately wanted Street Fighter or something like that, but my older brother (by 9 years) convinced me to get Civ for my birthday. So I did.

I remember so clearly getting upset (in tears) at a flashing little settler unit with the rest of the screen being black, I just wanted to play Street Fighter. We didn't have a clue how to play it. But we learned through many days and nights. My brother is somewhat of a bright spark so was very good at teaching me. When my mum and dad knew more about the game they no longer cared I was up at 4am in the morning sorting out crop, taxes and deliberating the consequences of a war because it was so stimulating/educational.


Geez got all emotional now.

Think I'll have to play some Civ 5 today.
 
I've played many an RTS. These are some of the better ones.

Star wars galactic battlegrounds
Starcraft 2
Command and conquer generals (zero hour)
Command and conquer red alert 2
Rise of nations
Rise of legends
Age of empires (3)
Civilisation 4 or 5 (not strictly rts but still good strat game)
Star wars empire at war (probably the worst on this list but nice space battles)
Rome total war
Shogun
Command and conquer tiberium sun

Take your pick. Of those my favourites would be SC2, C&C generals, Rome total war and Age of Empires. SC2 isn't 'easy' to get into, but once you do ... oh boy do you get into it.
 
Not sure why people keep saying Civilization ^^

The Dawn of War and Total War games are very easy to get into and play occasionally, avoid Starcraft.
 
Shogun 2 total war and Fall of the samurai (once you get good at it try the darthmod)
Company of heroes
Starcraft 2 (play sp first then try the mp its very forgiving)
 
Whop for Generals and Zeros Hour! :)
Still got a very strong multiplayer, only wished people didnt spam tomahawks :/
