Hardware Unboxed picked up on this when Digital Foundry made a review of the 3080 before the official NDA lift, Doom Eternal was also featured in Nvidia's performance slides.

It did lead to people thinking the 3080 was going to be twice as fast as the 2080, Jensen made similar claims in his kitchen on that day. A lot of people on the internet used it as a performance measure comparatively to the 2080 and 2080TI.

Long story short Hardware Unboxed reiterated his findings in the RTX 3080 review.

That is with the settings Digital Foundry used Doom Eternal would use 9GB of VRam, the RTX 2080 only has 8GB, this would cause the 2080 to choke on that lack of VRam and the performance is a lot less compared with the 3080 than it is with reduced Texture Quality setting that use only 7GB of VRam

4K Ultra Nightmare (9GB)
2080 88 FPS (100%)
2080TI 140 FPS (159%)
3080 189 (215%)

4K Ultra Nightmare, Ultra Textures (7GB)
2080 111 FPS (100%)
2080TI 140 FPS (126%)
3080 189 (170%)

To be clear, with reduced texture quality settings the 2080TI and 3080 are identical in performance, the only change is the 2080, the 11GB 2080TI was 59% faster and that changed to 26%, the 10GB 3080 was 115% faster, that changed to 70% faster.

The law states you can mislead people but not break the law.

Saying "Up to" and "faster than" means it only needs to meet one requirement.

I've lived in the USA, where they literally **** each other off (businesses) in TV adverts and as long as you don't out and out lie you are fine.

It's called being cut throat mate, get used to it or develop some distrust.

Oh so you are happy for mis leading advertising then? Did you sell your RTX 20xx too cheaply?

Whats actually misleading? There are instances in the doom benchmark where it's actually 2x faster than a 2080.

Then again if people aren't happy with their 3080's they can return it for a refund...No wait.

Oh and what RTX 2000 series card did I have Mr Know it all?

Everyone is quick to forget the 970 and it's "4GB" of RAM

Of course promotional stuff is misleading if they can get away with it they will, it's nothing new, they've been doing it for a long time and will continue to, people love it for some reason they can't part with their cash fast enough

Hardware Unboxed may have a bit of a CPU bottleneck if they used used the 3XXX CPU

But I don't think the promotional material made the 3080 twice as fast as the 2080.

I suggested up to twice as powerful as the 5700XT and that is the case when it's ran at 4K with no CPU bottleneck.

It's just people and hype, I don't understand why people are being so weird with this release.

These results are just what i thought would happen, it was obvious with the TDP and pricing.
Nvidia has a good chip, its not a god or some other fantastical thing though and it is beatable ...... if AMD actually comes to the table this time.
