Rtx 3090 FE psu connection issue?

Phanteks revolt 850w sfx but have no space to use that adapter with two pcie 8pins and can't find the box for the 3090 to get the adapter was thinking of just chopping the extra 4 ground pins off the cable but not sure if it would work.

Don't do it unless your fully understand the wiring but my understanding is 2 wires are sense and 2 are ground. Rather than. Butcher your own cable maybe by an extension cable mite be easier to mod.

Is the 16 pin not backwards compatible?

I assumed not because the op said it didn't fit.

No the new 12+4pin cables on the new power supplies will not fit due to no space for the +4pins to seat.

I'm now thinking this maybe the reason I give my wife to justify gpu upgrade "I can't return this new psu so I'll just have to get that darned 4090".

Take a look at the below if your thinking of removing the 4 pin sense cable.

Fasgear PCI-e Gen 5.0 Power Cable - 70cm 16pin (12+4) 12VHPWR male to male

What the OP needs is one of the original 12 pin adaptors without the extra 4 pins on top. Something like this although I would be happier if the wires were AWG 16 and not AWG 18 but it should work. As it's just a extension cable it will work with all psu's and you simply plug a pair of 6+2 pin pci-e cables into it.

A custom cable would be better suited.

You should be able to get a 12 pin - 2 x 8 pin made for your specific PSU also in varying lengths to suit your case size.
