I've bought an RTX 4070 for my son's PC. The CPU is a rather ancient i9 7900X. How much performance from the GPU am I am leaving on the table? I could upgrade him but having already spent quite a bit on the GPU and also an AIO CPU cooler to replace the custom water loop in there I'd rather not unless the CPU is hampering the GPU badly.

Advice welcome, cheers :)

Cheers all... he is gaming at 1440p so maybe not much point. The 7900X is de-lidded so there might be some overclocking headroom. If they respond well to that maybe I'll try it.

In newer games, there is a driver overhead issue with older CPUs. The 7900X is a Skylake based design(as is the Core i5 9400 in the review) so I would be inclined to tweak the RAM as much as possible,as it can help quite a lot in some games.

Well the Ryzen 5 5600 would be a bit cheaper overall, but it would be dependent on pricing on the day IMHO.
Nice one. Good advice... I think when funds permit I will end up replacing the board and cpu but for now I guess he'll just have to manage. :)
