RTX 4070 - Minimum CPU to avoid bottleneck

I've bought an RTX 4070 for my son's PC. The CPU is a rather ancient i9 7900X. How much performance from the GPU am I am leaving on the table? I could upgrade him but having already spent quite a bit on the GPU and also an AIO CPU cooler to replace the custom water loop in there I'd rather not unless the CPU is hampering the GPU badly.

Advice welcome, cheers :)

It probably isn't too bad. Probably not enough for core upgrade. Have you looked for a second hand 109xx chip? Could be a cheaper way to get a boost.

I wouldn't bother, especially if they're playing at 1440p or 4K.

Cheers all... he is gaming at 1440p so maybe not much point. The 7900X is de-lidded so there might be some overclocking headroom. If they respond well to that maybe I'll try it.

In newer games, there is a driver overhead issue with older CPUs. The 7900X is a Skylake based design(as is the Core i5 9400 in the review) so I would be inclined to tweak the RAM as much as possible,as it can help quite a lot in some games.

12400f without doubt.

Well the Ryzen 5 5600 would be a bit cheaper overall, but it would be dependent on pricing on the day IMHO.

Nice one. Good advice... I think when funds permit I will end up replacing the board and cpu but for now I guess he'll just have to manage. :)

But that is dependent on the game. Surely a vcache CPU would be better in newer heavy hitting titles but for older games it won't matter? And would it not be dependent on how the game is optimised, CPU dependent etc.

I have a 4070Ti with an I7 9700K at 1440p with no issues.

Been playing Diablo 4 without any issues, Division 2 etc

forgot to mention I do have 32GB of ram as well and I have no overclock on the cpu so its all stock except XMP enabled on the ram
