The way GPUs are now im so glad I got my EVGA G2 1000w back in 2014 - this has seen everything from 980 Ti SLI to RTX 2080 Ti to 3090 with 500w Bios on it and now 9070 Xt.
Preach brother. My 1600W G2 is a legacy of buying a 1300W G2 that wouldn't cut it with 295X2 Quadfire a decade ago and upping my PSU. Lesson I learned then is a bigger beefier PSU is never a bad thing. 10 years from a PSU with 295x2 quadfire, 980TI SLI/1080TI SLI and today a 5090 has made me a believer in getting a big powerful PSU. I couldn't have done any of that if I had stuck with 1000W.1000W isnt just scraping over the line though.
I have a fully watercooled system which has additonal power demands with pumps and other accessories and have plenty of headroom even with the 5090 at full tilt.
You also dont need to uprate your PSU for power deviations, its catered for in the ATX 3.0/3.1 specification.
I'm not advocating for never needing more than 1000W, I just don't subscribe to the idea that people NEED 1300W PSUs now (or perhaps ever)
Nividia recommend 1200W+ for 5090+IntelAny advice or real-world experience would be much appreciated before I pull the trigger.
- Would this system bottleneck the 5090 in any way?
- Is it safe (or even realistic) to run it on an 850W PSU, or should I plan on upgrading to 1000W+ straight away?
