RTX3090 underperforming?

I have a MSI RTX 3090 with a Ryzen 3900xt at 1440p 144hz.

When playing games. I notice that I'm only getting around 100-120 fps in games on ultra. Cod cold war is running 80-90 fps and borderlands 3 runs at around 102fps.

Other benchmarks are getting a lot higher, even 3080 benchmarks are hitting the same fps as mine.

The 3d mark score is only about 500 under the average so I'm stumped as to whether my card is underperforming or whether Im just overestimating the capabilities of this card

If your 3d mark score is okay and boost clock performance and speed looks about what you expect, then thing your fine.

Can't do broad comparisons to other reviews easily, likely different CPU's, you mention 3900xt which is good, but not quiet up there with new Ryzen stuff and Intel stuff which in reviews are usually also overclocked. Add on settings, usually clean build of windows etc.

Given you mention 3080 in those reviews paired with usually better gaming CPUs is hitting similar numbers to your 3090 with a slightly slower CPU, I suspect your about where you should be. The 3090 stretch's its legs more at 4k and even then delta is not massive to 3080 in reviews with OC'd CPUs etc.

Definitely should be getting more. 2080Ti hitting usually between 120-165fps on cold war 1440p. Even with every setting maxed, raytracing etc still hits 120fps+.

3090 is around 50% faster? So should be getting more from it.

Can't just arbitrarily compare random scenes in games without context. OP, I suggest you compare the performance on the GPU synthetics alone to see how the GPU fares, vs others. The fact you mention its ballpark of other 3090's leads me to believe the GPU itself is fine. its just not able to stretch its legs, other limits at times or general limit of the game. This is without context which is against my first line, Borderlands 3 for example is around the 100-110 mark in reviews with 3090 with badass settings. COD cold war may vary depending on single player / multiplayer a lot more I imagine. That said while your other numbers seem good, someone else did open a thread with few replies specific to 3xxx and war zone: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/forums/threads/rtx-30-series-low-warzone-fps.18907378/

Either way, suggest you check benchmarks the focus specifically on GPU performance and monitor the GPU's behaviour. 3D mark Port Royal etc.

As said in other threads about this.

MSI shafted the 2 X 8 pin 3090 cards.
The bios is only 350W, where as the NV FE card is 400W

So your hitting most of the limits out the box.
Either send it back or flash another bios.

Did this ever get resolved? I'm running 1440p and only getting 100-130fps with my RTX3090 and Ryzen 5950X.
Getting a Timespy score of 18,000+

Is that graphics timespy score or overall? Timespy graphics score should be around 19.5k, if you are getting that then everything is fine with the card and any fps issue is software related.

RTX3090 is a 4k card really. You wont get great scores with 1440p. Get MSI afterburner running and see if you are CPU or GPU bound.

this was the score in the programme with the two GPU tests and the single CPU test

My FE 3090 has a 350W limit. If I crank it to 114% in afterburner it tends to sit at 385W and no higher.

It's why undervolting works so well with these cards - it allows a little headroom on the power limit.

I need to understand this undervolting thing and settings in Afterburner, I don't need any overclocks, just want to run this 3090 at optimal settings to make it chug along nicely for the foreseeable future :)

Google Undervolting guide Optimum Tech, he does a nice couple of vids for the new rtx 3000 series and an explanation of undervolting. think of making your card run nice and smooth without pushing unneeded voltages

I used optimum techs guide but my card always runs slower

sure I can save up to 100w but it also cuts performance, I never managed to find a point where it gains performance and saved power, saving power always meant performance loss

Not everyone needs to run their cards at max. It's just trade off at what point is the Power draw not worth the small gains in fps. Same like Clocking CPU, sure I can run my cpu at 5.2ghz all core, but it's not worth me showing 1.6V through it, drop it to 5.1ghz at 1.33V, that's the way I look at undervolting, if I had my gpu under water though, I'd have it cranked though :p:D

Ok, trying to diagnose my FPS issues in Warzone using MSI Afterburner and GPU-Z:
MSI Afterburner is telling me I'm at 95% GPU load @ c. 60 degrees, whilst CPU load is at around 30% consistently (at 4k)
Looking at GPU-Z, the PerfCap Reason is 'Idle'.... any ideas (screenshot below)?

I never understood the acceptance of losing performance on purpose that you paid for. If you're kneecapping your 3090 you should have just bought a 3080 and saved all that money
