Are they any good? I have a few carpets I'd like to see if I can give a spruce up, but they're probably just awful-quality carpets to begin with.

Since it's getting towards autumn... and it's no longer hot - I don't really want to have really damp carpets for long. I suppose I could put the heating on but heat rises, and carpets are on the floor, at least the hall carpet.

My parents have an ancient vax thing which has the ability to shampoo carpets... but it does leave them rather damp... I wonder if the rug doctor things do a better job of drying them out?

Found it very good, shocking how dirty the carpets were, despite them looking clean:o, I use one at my last place, but the carpets took 2 or 3 hours to dry out, had I done them in the summer, then it would have been much quicker.
Need to leave windows out & get plenty of ventilation going through the rooms.

ive used these before, find the Range are the cheapest to hire from (than say B&Q).

Again you need to leave sufficient time for the carpets to dry but has impressive results

Better off paying a professional carpet cleaner to do the work. By the time you rent and the time it takes you to do it just get the pros to do it.

Just need to search Rug Doctor damage to read about problems people have.

used one recently on a flat we moved out of. hired it from B&Q, easy to use, seemed to work pretty well (we basically left it wet and handed the keys back).

Personally I get my Butler to arrange it all, one call to Harrods Domestic Services and it's all sorted apparently :)

I've used Rug Doctors a few times, don't bother with their expensive cleaner liquid, try the Blissell one from Home Bargains (~$4). In fact liquid washing machine liquid works exactly the same.
You'll need a bucket to refill the machine with hot water, it's not the best design in the world.

Check the machine before hand, most people don't bother cleaning it afterwards.

RugDoctor works well I find. Do some spotting before with something like 1001 and then do a general clean with the machine. Amazing how much filth comes out.

Just mention this in passing, Vax have a factory sale on at the moment, you can pick up their best buy carpet cleaner for £139, others for around £99 or less.
6year warranty too iirc

They all do much the same thing as any other brand.

Rather do it myself for the cost of the machine at £25 and save myself £100+ on pro fees. Which at the end of the day is probably just a DIYer who bought a second hand industrial machine and advertises for extra income.

They work fine and have hired one about three times. Possibly a bit severe, but if you have fragile or shag file carpet probably best you don't use one. Get some ear defenders because they are noisy as hell.

Try not to use them too often, as they will eventually take the colour from your carpets.

Having three mucky dogs, they do work the biz on carpet :-)

Vax machines are pretty good (My folks have a £300 one), but they are quite fragile. They also have decent hand tools with them which is excellent for carpet on stairs.

Used a Rug Doctor this summer, hired from the local hardware store. The difference was literally incredible. I guess it depends how dirty your carpets are to start with as to how much difference you'd notice, but we a) were very impressed and b) noticed no damage or anything.

Rug doctors are great. I own a care home and we have been using rug doctors for 10+ years without any problems at all. They are also great at cleaning a carpet after a flood to hoover up excess water.

Not in my experience :)
Bought one a few years ago,it was crap, still in the attic
Last summer we rented a rugdoctor, should have seen all the crap it lifted out of the carpets:eek:
The lightest colour one looked like a new carpet (Well nearly :D )

@tigerstyle, Morrisions are £20 a day for me, get your cleaner solution from home bargains.

Awesome, one not too far from me, INFACT new one just opened close to me, word.

Do you know if that comes with all the handheld little nozzle things for cars too?
And I'll eBay/Homebargains the fluid, thanks for the home bargains tip!

Yes it comes with a separate nozzle thing for stairs which should be OK for cars, it's a bit of a faff to uncouple the hoses to attach it though.
