Rules surrounding the freezing of purchased foods

My dad pointed out that he bought a cheesecake from a supermarket but in recent months it had gone from freezable to non freezable even though the ingredients were 100% the same :/

See above, perhaps it now gets frozen at some point before getting to the supermarket.

Isn't the freeze on day of purchase just the retailers way of preventing being sued by someone who got food poisong becaus ethety didn't read the use by date.

Some kind of get out clause/money saving scheme from the supermarket would be my first thoughts too!

Also cooking resets the 'don't re-freeze' rule. You can defrost meat, cook it and then freeze it again.

#3 is also about the properties of the food. The freezing process can affect the taste and texture of the food, and obviously the manufacturers and supermarkets want their products to be enjoyed by the consumers - freezing can affect flavour and consistency. It won't be dangerous to eat or bad for you, it just will not be as expected.

Or it could have already been frozen in transit.

Salads item don't freeze well, so if a meal has them in it generally says don't freeze. You can freeze but probably don't want to eat the salad items after defrosting.

If it just meat/fish etc it might have been already frozen. Prawns can be like this, so it can lead to the bacteria problem in point 2, so shouldn't be refrozen.

Number 1 to me makes no sense. If I went to the store a day later and bought the same item I would still be allowed to freeze it, so why can't i take it home a day early and freeze it the following morning?

That's because it's an advisory, not a rule :-)

Surely with number 2 as long as you don't get a virus on the food then it can be re-frozen?

See above, mainly becuase thawing and freezing and encourage the growth of bacteria and re-freezing can actually break down the celular structure of the item, making it's texture less than ideal (freeze and refreeze strawberries to see what I mean).

And with number 3 why can some food not be frozen? I think the food can tbh but they must have some reasoning for why they say you can't.

Again - an advisory - not a rule. Oh, and freeze a cucumber and let us know how it works out :-)
