Trouble is that those people who went the oculus route because it was initially cheaper not thinking they would want touch are going to be stuck with a very expensive choice to switch, or just go for touch and be stuck with only standing/front facing VR.

there are seemingly a lot of people that are convinced motion controls are not worth the extra money, likely because of wii/kinect. before I tried them I didnt think they were all that important just a nice to have. having tried there is no way I would want a VR system without them.

imo given that oculus is essentially designed for sitting/standing/front facing VR and thats what oculus developers will limit themselves too, oculus should really be making their full solution cheaper. right now if you are paying the same for both.. the vive still has more capabilities. If you can do room scale, I fail to see why would want to pay just as much for the oculus to not have it. It should be that oculus owners save a bit of money in exchange for that limitation.

also November 21st is oculus missing their original october launch again, are they going to have the same stock availability issues too?

The Oculus Touch is seamlessly supported by the Steam SDK.

All current Steam VR games can be played with the Oculus Touch as far as I'm aware.

Yeah steam is fine, but the oculus sensor has a flat stand designed to be placed on a desk, they dont have wall mounts and the cables are not long enough for a full room scale setup.

I'm not saying the oculus cant do it, You can make it do it with extension cables and buying mounts but then you will have then paid more to get the same experience, at very least touch should come with a couple of wall mounts included, but as it now it should be cheaper.

also it will be a niche setup for people to do that vs just putting them on a desk and oculus developers are not going to write software for niche setups, as a result any oculus software will not be designed with it in mind.

Between this, the PS4 Pro and PSVR I'm going to be very broke at a time I can't afford to be. ^_^; oops!

As a developer I'm not worried about the capabilities of the Touch setup to provide the experience I want without large, room scale VR. Most people I get in to test my game prefere to sit or stand without too much movement involved. I also havn't seen anyone come out with numbers that proves the market for room scale VR is significant.

We're literally talking £10 for the wall mounts and USB extensions required.

The flat base detaches from the camera via a standard tripod mount / screw.

I do agree it's barrier for the user but again, regardless of Oculus first party approach to their game development, users will have access to the entire steam VR catalog.

I'll likely pick these up somewhere down the line, but part of the attraction of the rift was being able to make that choice and spread the cost out.

Personally I'm totally sold on the need for touch controllers but I have no interest in roomscale. The touch controllers look less cumbersome and have thumbsticks so I opted to wait.

Nov 21 is a leaked retail date, I'm hoping oculus will still release direct around october and then push out to retail later just like they did with the rift but, hey, if I have to wait til nov then so be it. 200 quid(ish) sounds about right.
