While Sony is preparing an official announcement for its next PlayStation console later today, rumours are still circulating about what online features the system will house.

A source recently reported to Kotaku that the PS4 will offer a paid premium subscription to access most of the system's online features.

The service is said to be called PlayStation World, and would replace the current PlayStation Plus subscription with something more similar to Microsoft's Xbox Live.

Such rumours should often be taken with a grain of salt, though Kotaku noted the anonymous source is the same one that originally revealed the PlayStation 4's codename, Orbis.

Only a matter of time

Along with the online rumours, the source suggested that the PlayStation 4 will launch in the U.S. sometime in November.

There will allegedly be two models sold at the time, with U.S. pricing suggested to be $429 and $529 respectively.

The prices are subject to change, of course, and it's not expected that Sony will announce the system's price during the event later today.

In fact, the online subscription may still be a mystery after today if Sony focuses on an overview of the new hardware instead of specific features.

There are only a few hours left until Sony makes the official PS4 debut, so be sure to check out our PS4 landing page to catch up on all of the reports and rumours so far.

My thoughts: Looks like XBOX 720 will be a bigger hit to me than of what the PS4 will be because of the "Online Network" capabilities. I don't think I'll ever want to get a PS4 or any Sony branded console within the future. They may make their online paid for which is poor quality anyhow and people are now being expected to pay for it. What is Sony doing? lol. If this is true; most people will switch to XBOX making Microsoft win automatically. Sony is forcing themselves out of their business.

Just to add in here is some more useful information: http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/consoles/ps4-release-date-news-and-features-937822

I'd hazard a guess that Playstation World would be like the PS+ service which we have now, but with the Gaikai stuff bolted on as well. Not sure where you get the impression that the PSN is lacklustre when compared to XBL, it lacks party chat, that's the only thing missing and while the PSN was targeted by hackers that can happen to any company and often does. Sony responded to it well in my opinion, but I'm not sure why you had to put that nonsense in the OP anyway. Also this could have been posted in the PS4 speculation thread.

Like the title states it is only a "RUMOUR", but I think they will to increase sales. Although, it may stabilise or even make them worse.

Have you ever thought that PSN is rubbish because its free? If it was a paid service then I would expect it to be a lot better.

PSN needs to be built in to every game like Live, having to pm a mate or phone them to ask them to join a lobby in GT5 instead of opening the friends list and clicking invite for instance.

PSN is deffo tacked on like an afterthought and I imagine Sony will sort that out for PS4.

I think I read a rumour on some site that it would be $89 a year for PS+, gakai (streaming free games that change every month), some online video clip sharing and cloud storage for game saves.

Too much money imo. I think XBL is $59.99 and is the market leader. I would pay £40 a year and not a penny more (and in a way I already do for PS+!!)

Maybe, but remember it will be connecting to the same Network. Although another instance of it.

Sounds like an xbot xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

What do you mean? lol

Agreed, it is too much to rise above and go over the XBOX Live service in cost(s). Streaming games from their Network to a console? That will put enormous amounts of strain on their Network. It is already finding it hard to cope with match making on a game such as COD.

do we really need another thread for this ?

We've got 2 Playstation 4 threads already.

This is a discussion on the PlayStation Network/Online related topic. It mainly covers the new new costs and paid for service. Also named as "rumours".

Yeah right.

Most of the content of that quote is about the PS4 with a tit bit thrown in that they might re-name plus to world.

They may make their online paid for which is poor quality

hmm 3/4 years ago i was playing 60 players FPS lag free with dedicated servers on PSN while my paid for xbox live struggled with constantly reconnecting and rehosting 12/16 player FPS that where hosted on little johnnys mums BT line

doesnt have all the gimmicks that live has i suppose

That's strange. What game were it if you can remember?

If its suppose to be a media centre in the living room then it has to be free to use mose of the services.
Fine if they charge just for playing games online or streaming of games.

My answer is the same it always is when this pops up - Live is worth the money over PSN, so if Sony is to charge they best pull their fingers out and catch up.

The treatment PSN EU gets is shoddy especially, DLC, demo and patches often appear weeks after the JP or US PSN - no way I'm paying for that

What does Live offer? Ability to chat cross game and adverts in my face?

Sony's PS+ is already worth more than live with the 'free' games you get, discounts and beta access.

Equal treatment with all the other regions? A proper integrated (at OS level) party and invite system, party chat, cross game chat?
Better uptime (for me at least, never had downtime since Xmas 2008), faster servers (patching on my now sold 360 was much quicker then in my now also sold ps3 - never obtained the same DL speed.

I could go on, PSN was a tacked on experience (probably caught out by Live's integration at the 360 reveal ) and it showed. Hopefully PS4 fixes things

Warhawk is another online game that didnt skip a beat. The only problem with psn is it lacksa few live features. But lag or actusl gaming is never a problem.

One thing they suffer from is download speeds, but thats an infrastructure problem with isps from what I've read. Virgin media being the worst culprit. Something to do with how they manage psn traffic.

Glad to hear ps4 is bringing an always present os though during gaming. Will be closer to the xbox dash that way =) because I do agree the psn in game features did feel like a badly implimented after thought
