Ooops: Can a mod plz fix my title "Oct '12" to "Oct '13" :)

The latest rumours circulating are that the PS4 could be launched in October 2013 and the Xbox 720 could be November 2013. Both costing $350-400 SRP price bracket.

Both said to be built from off the shelf high-end PC parts. For ease and speedy development and shorter learning curve.

Both to be unveiled at E3 in June 2013.

Sony have been on record for saying that they're not going to let MS get the launch lead they got with the Xbox 360.

Looks like the battle between the 2 is about to heat up. Just a waiting game to see how these rumours stand.

There's also rumours that they may not wait until E3 to make the announcement and hold a private event which will be streamed live on their platforms and on the internet.

I think at this stage there's little doubt that there will be an announcement and release this year so they may choose to do it before E3. Question then is who can get the console out first with the best launch software.

Either way it's going to be a good year for gamers and something to look forward to.
 
Surprised if they would go head to head with new consoles so close to each other. I feel I have had my moneys worth out of the 360, not sure could say the same about the PS3 if they are bringing out the PS4.

- AMD x86 Jaguar 1.6GHZ 8-Core [Targeting one core being dedicated for OS tasks]
- AMD 8000 series GPU
- ESRAM on the GPU (unknown amount)
- 8GB Ram DDR3, [1.5GB of RAM likely reserved for the operating system]
- Launch 2013

In a note to investors Baird's Colin Sebastian brought together various rumours about the new consoles that have been floating around the games business over the past year, and the assumption that both Sony and Microsoft will reveal their new consoles just prior to E3 in June.

1.6GHz 8 core? Surely thats a typo lol. You'll have phones beating that next year.
 
A Sony executive has come out and said they may announce something before E3 source
But our friends are preparing PlayStation. I can only say that we are focused on the E3 gaming event, scheduled for June. Announcement may be in that minute or even earlier in May.

Most of these rumours are completely made up from web sites looking for hits in my opinion. Anyway, I would expect both to be released in time for christmas with a price of £300 to £350.

I doubt there will be any must have titles from either console at launch either, why companies always release their consoles like this always baffles me. A launch day Uncharted 4 or (Zelda/Mario for Wii U) would ensure a much better launch.

Hopefully they both use 1080p as standard although i'm not fussed about 60 fps.
 
What kind of innovation were you looking for? Microsoft have that projector thing going on. Personally, I'm happy with a more powerful version of a "traditional" console with a normal gamepad and none of this motion control/kinect stuff. Innovation should be seen via software imo.
 
Agree, I'd be more than happy with a more powerful version of the traditional console. The extra power will hopefully allow developers to be more innovative. My actual fear for next gen is that they will push some motion control etc. Ohhh and I hope MS don't mess around with their controller too much as the one they have works so well.

Hopefully Sony and MS will follow Nintendo and make the current game pads compatible with the new consoles. Cant deal with forking out the same amount of money for a controller I could buy a new game for.
 
But conversely more power = better graphics/AI etc = more investment needed = higher chance of sequels :(. Its not a surprise that this generation is full of sequels, I just cant see the next one having less considering the kinda money it takes to make a AAA game nowadays. Takes quite a ballsy publisher to back new IPs and theres very few of those around, when the same rehashed rubbish makes them just as much money if not more...

Why I tend to play/buy more games from the console stores as they tend to favour originality over fidelity.

I don't really mind sequels tbh as long as they are not rushed cash grabs like Dragon Age 2. New ips will be rarer though especially since a lot of the smaller publishers seem to be getting into financial difficulty lately and one failed game could conceivably sink them.

AI is one area I would like to see an improvement in but I have no idea how complicated it is to program so won't get my hopes up.

Moreover, a PC-based architecture (Intel chips in the case of Xbox) should have a number of advantages over custom-developed silicon: for one, the learning curve for software developers will be shorter than completely new technology. Second, the cost of production and retail price points should be lower than prior console launches.

This is changing all the time. I've just read they are going to unveil them both at Apple-style events at GDC in March. :)
