Run an OS within an OS

Is this possible?

I have a second hard drive in my PC with a good Windows XP install on it. Can I 'play' this OS in my primary, Windows 7 OS? I have some car software that is XP only and won't install on a virtual machine.

I'm fairly sure VMWare Workstation will allow you to 'virtualise' a physical machine. It might be easier just to do a fresh install of XP in the VM and install the car software again, though.

this is rare for XP software not to work on W7,

have you tried changing the shortcut compatibility options? making sure its running as an administrator? etc etc...

you've been able to create VMs with vmware player for a long time now. no need for workstation at all.
