Run old and new versions of Java at the same time?

Is it possible/advisable to run the latest version of Java and an older version of Java on a PC at the same time?

I'm asking because I need to use an application that only supports an older version of Java, but I don't really want to uninstall the latest version unless I have to.

Hi KIA, thanks for your reply.

I have no knowledge of virtual machines and I'm pretty sure it will be out of my comfort zone, but I'll definitely look into it, thanks.

To clarify though: can you have two versions of Java downloaded at the same time and will each application access the version it requires by default? It may not be ideal but will it work?
 
Is there any reason for you to have the latest version of Java installed? You could just install the old version, and then disable it within the browser plugin page so it won't be a security threat when you're browsing the web.

The reason I didn't want to uninstall the latest version was in fact because I wanted to have the latest security protection. But from what you're saying I can disable it to avoid this? But if I disable it then how will the application I'm using be able to run?

Yes I mark (scanned) exam papers online and they use a secure web page to upload the papers. The website uses an activex control which has 32 bit architecture so I have to use a 32 bit browser. I just log in and can mark the papers on the screen.

But for some reason the software they use only supports a very old version of Java. Presumably because the developers haven't updated the software to support the latest version.
 
KIA, that sounds like a very simple solution, and thanks for the link. But how do I access the Java control panel from a particular browser window? I've looked in the internet options but I can't find it.

KIA: I've just found the Java control panel by searching for it; but if I disable java as suggested, won't this disable java in ALL the browsers I have open? So as per your suggestion if I use two browsers won't this disable Java in both? How do I tell it to only disable Java in one specific browser?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm not good at this so please bear with me :)
 
But under that section it says the following for IE:

"Internet Explorer

The only way to completely disable Java in Internet Explorer (IE) is to disable Java through the Java Control Panel as noted above."

which is why I was trying to do it via the Java control panel. I could use a different browser such as Chrome I suppose.
