Runners - help me begin

I tried most shoes over the years and new balance to be one of the best, they are also made in uk if that sways you.
get proper advice as stated.
try to start on grass around a park to allow your lower limbs get used to the pounding.
start by running and walking use trees or lamp posts as markers and slowly your stamina will increase, this also aids massively your recovery training. it is as important to rest as well as train.
start maybe with one day on 2 off, everynow and then train 2 days in a row and have 3-4 days off, the body needs to recover.
always always warmup with a wlak and good 5-10 mins stretching, the same as a warm down, this helps recovery, clear the acid fromm the muscles which can lead to cramping and muscle damage, finally stay well hyrdrated during the day...enjoy it :)

the worst part about running is when you get an upset stomache in the middle of your run....and you have to walk home so slowly with great pain and difficulty or you will have something brown and nasty running down your leg:p

I fail to see what is sadistic about loving running :/
The mind numbing tedium that comes with running, if you love that...
Could just be me but I can't get into the mindset to do running for any kind of distance, I used to do up to 10km runs before I broke my ankle, I had to have an mp3 player with me and I was acutely aware the whole time of how long it was taking. Any longer than the above just became too mentally frustrating.
Swimming on the other hand I can get into a mode where I am absorbed by concentrating on the stroke, my breathing, the next turn, and it doesn't get boring, even without any other distraction.

I've done distance swimming and distance running. They're much of a muchness. Get into the zone and the time and distance just flies by.

I also have a new toy for my Ipod Nano, nike are doing a little sensor which you put into your trainer and then the other bit plugs into your ipod, it then tracks your run, and gives you an idea of how you are doing.Quite usefull for newbies.

I bought one of these last week, I think it is pretty good. For £19 it was well worth the money.

It inspired me to get back into my running after a six month break of doing no exercies

You should make sure you get some decent running shoes, it makes all the difference.

Taking of running, I just got back from 10m. A fine example of why finding the right shoes helps, I spent about 6 months of trying to increase my distances and getting horrible 'cramps' lasting days for my troubles.

Recently switched my shoes and now I can run 10 miles without the problems I was experiencing and I am one very happy bunny.

with reagrds to cycling v running. i believe you have to ride 7 times further than running to get the same fitness benefit. obviously different muscles

What sort of shoes did you get CBS?

I am in the market for some new running shoes, my current ones have had a lot of pounding over the past three years.

The shoes that were causing problems had much softer soles that my present ones. My present ones have thick soles.

I seem to be the only person on here who has had problems with a decent pair of running shoes, so I'm not going to generalise my experience or claim to know something that others dont.

I'd say most likely any pair of proper running shoes would be fine for anyone, but I would also say that people should pay close attention to what they have on their feet and how their body feels after running, then a day after running, then two days.

I used to be fine on the entire run. Fine until I got up the next morning, and then the pain could last for up to a week, occaisionally longer.
