Running 5760x1080 BF3 on ULTRA - Am I Running Out Of Memory on GPU? 2x6990's?

[email protected], DDR2 memory (when at least there is 8gb of it) and dual 6990's. That has to be one of the most unbalanced systems I have ever seen (GPU(s) compared to rest of system). Pretty sure you would get better performance in some games by selling one 6990 and the motherboard/DDR2 mem/q6600 and buying a I5 2500K with a new mb and 8gb of ddr3 ram ....with a lot of change to spare to!

When I had my Q6600 @ 3.8 with 4870x2 + 4870 it was bottlenecking me, as once I went to my 2500k i instantly got 30+ fps more at the same settings. Each GPU was previously only able to use sub 50% of its capabilities, now they are all 80%+

I'd definitely look at getting a 2500k or better, although that said it still isn't beyond the realms of possibility that you'd run into a VRAM bottleneck at that resolution with AA enabled.

It's because I was about to buy an i5 and gear (in a seperate thread), then I was offered a 6990 at a daft price for a 2 month olf one, and just bought it thinking it'd be good for the future and if quadfire sucked I'd sell on... so, it's not that I'm fooling myself thinking that I'd get 4x the performance of a 6970, it was a bit of futureproofing... however at the moment, I'm now in the situatio I can't buy the i5 which is what I wanted with bits as I've not got £400. Was considering selling one of the 6990's and upgrading... OR selling both, buying a 7970 and i5 with the cash!

Sell both 6990s and get the i5/7970 bundle. Trust me, I know how difficult multi-GPU setups can be without real time/effort/patience.

The resounding opinion is that is that - once beautiful CPU - is holding you back! :)

You're better off with the latter. Mostly because there isn't a CPU on earth that could let two 6990s stretch their legs properly.

Infact I would be truly surprised if that Q6600 could even let one 6970 loose.

My I7 950 holds back my 7970 when compared to my friend's I7 2600k. By about 15%.

That is sweet, what's in the back of my mind is, I get rid of the 2x6990's, buy one 7970 and i5 i.e. spend all proceeds. What I'd then have is a rig with less potential than if I just wait for a month or two, buy a i5 and keep the 6990's...

God I hate this kind of thing... what to do... what to do... lol. Thing is, just been looking back over some review sites and this one in particular shows the 6990 way ahead of the 7970 even when overclocked... I think it'd be a backward step going from 2x6990's to 1x7970 and i5... I think I need to grin and bear it and put some cash away over next 2 months for my i5 and stick to the 6990's...
