Nice, lots of cinemas are going over to using such things

Might be cheaper just to rent a multiplex

I'm not that far away either, I'm in Staplehurst. If you don't mind me asking, where do you purchase your kit?

I've got most of mine from Home Media in Maidstone.

I don't tend to buy first hand, the guys in Home Media are nice but its too dear and I only every buy the odd thing or go in to lust over the high end KEF speakers :)

My original Q30s came from there when it was Unilet since then all the big stuff came off ebay or audiophile candy apart from my AV amp which I bought off DRZ. In the living room the Cantons came from a guy on AVForums and the Marantz from Richer

What type of connections does summut like that have???....

HDMI???... Component???... S-Video???... Some Weird Proprietry connector???...

i have been doing this for just over a year and half. only bad thing is the price of the bulb. and of course the sunlight in the summer.

my bulb is running down at the minute and ive used just over 2000 hours. the dark scenes are getting harder to watch as a green tint covers my screen as the bulb dies.

but i only paid £500 for my projector Sharp PG-B10S and a new bulb is going to set me back £250.

my dad's 42" Plasma cost him £1500 and its totally crap to be perfectly honest. when a face walks past the camera you can see the shading *blocks* of different colour.

I've had an AE500 for over two years now and still love it, don't be put off by the fact its 'old' (in tech terms at least) it's fully HD ready and will take any signal you give it.
Right now even if I had the cash I wouldn't consider changing it as I don't think the subsequent projectors have improved enough (other than being brighter and a few handy extras).

It looks stunning with an HD image

The AE900 is quite a large jump from the 700, let alone the 500. Would certainly be enough to make me change up. They are available for peanuts (£850 or so) from ebay too these days :)

900 isn't that much of a jump from the 700, just some contrast and brightness improvements but nothing revolutionary tbh

Have you actually seen the results though of them adding an acceptable CR? Its worth the upgrade cost ten fold :)

I admit i have been spoiled with CRT levels of contrast, but to me the 700 was a big dissapointment, the 900 is one hell of a lot better and gets towards being a "natural" looking digital display. (if thats possible!)

Alas I have no problem with anything picture-wise so I would not consider upgrading, £850 is hardly peanuts to me anyway.

Of course there's always something better out but I'm happy with what I have and it does what I need.

Spot on mate, I have total black out when I want it so its not an issue for me, the AE700 does everything I need until a decent 1080i becomes affordable

I personally have a Viewsonic PJ552 and I gotta say it's brill :)

Warm up time is probably 20 minutes before I'd consider the colour to be 'rich' although the actual device is ready to use in 2 mins.

Cooldown time.. depends how long you've been using it, so expect anything up to a good 5 minutes before you turn it off completely.

One thing I would add, get the best screen you can afford.. it will look utter pap on a painted wall / cheapo screen.

If I had to buy a second hand I'd recommend the same as everyone else really; Panasonic AE700, or saying that you can pick up a PJ552 for around your budget new .

Hope that helps.

I've been fairly fortunate with Home Media, they've always given me a good discount to bring things down to a reasonable level. Well, except when I ordered my amp over the phone while a bit drunk one day at uni, that was a bit of a mistake!!!

I mainly go in there to lust over the High end KEF stuff too, I've lost count of the number of times I've listend to the reference speakers and thought....if only i had a spare £10k....

Never been too sure about buying second hand particularly on ebay, cos I've always felt that it's hard to resolve problems if something turns up and is not 100% working. That said, I did pick up my minidisc deck from there. Luckily from a chap who had written such a bad description that no one else bid on it and I got it for about £30 less than every other listing of the exact same model that ended in the sme week!!! :o)

WHat is this audiophile candy that you speak of, is it another forum or something?

Well they dont use bulbs, but the CRT's are very expensive. Its not a worry though as you can see them wearing and they last for such a long time as long as you treat them with respect.

Ebay is also a good source of CRT's, they can often go for sub £100 etc. Which given their life is pennies compared with a digital's bulb. In general a CRT is cheaper to run.
