Running a summer plaything cheap SL for virtually nothing

If I had £5k to spend on a weekend/summer toy it would be on my list somewhere!

I am not really suggesting spending £5k on it, i am suggesting it as a depreciation free awesome play thing to have sitting on your drive for virtually nothing while cash has no value to the banks :)

My dad has one of these and I love it. Perfectly refined cruiser and for this money I don't think you can go far wrong!

Not for country road blasts, they wollow in the bends a lot more than a hard sports car would but waft along a fair old lick - and the noise is awesome!

I've thought about doing this many a time and bottled out. In general I hate Mercs But think these are fantastic looking. Do it Jez

Sorry, driving an open top HGV with high running costs is not my idea of summer fun. Far more fun to be had from something smaller and lighter I feel.

Thanks exactly what i think, i've always love the old SL but i don't see it as a summer play thing, but i suppose that depends what you call or want to do with a 'play thing' for me than means chucking it down some country lanes.

Mate of mine got a blue SL500 a few months back. Mint, with a removable hardtop & big AMG wheels. It's really nice for a cruising about in the summer type car. Gives a fair thump in the back if you give it some too.

Even if the engine goes you can just drop another in for next to nothing nowadays (dad got his local garage to source and fit a 90k engine for the princely sum of £600 all in for his when the bottom end cracked).

Sounds like a great idea sure, but realistically it's not as if you can just throw 5k in and get it back whenever you like. I'm sure it'd take aages to sell when you wanted your money back.

with a proper service history . . .

How bloody bargaintastic are these now, and what a toy it would be for the summer. Pretty much one of the best built cars ever made, supremely reliable with a glorious V8 engine, 155mph, all the electric toys.

A real merc from before the unreliable late 90's/early 00's era, and so cheap that it could be ran year to year with virtually zero depreciation.

What could be better, you take your 5 grand out whenever you get bored of it.

BULLET PROOF!!!!

khushy

I used to sell these new LOL - now have a completely different career (19 years) and just over a year ago we bought a 2003 SL500 - love it!

For me a summer play thing is parking by the river in Henley, doing a bit of boating and then going for a quick spin around the local roads to a friends house/local pub etc.

SL fits the bill perfectly. :)

Oooooooooooooooh :p

But seriously, great car! Would love to own one of these regardless of how old it looks. Wasnt it Brabus who produced a 6.9L V12 version of this? or was it a 6.7? Cant remember.
