Hi, Would running twice a day for about 2 miles each time help me with my asthma, say if i built up the distance every week as its training my breathing endurance sort of? i ask because this season i could not play much football as i would simply be to out of breath after running from one end of the pitch to the other and i would like to start playing again next season, if i start now this would give me enough time to loose a few pounds and get me fitter.

many thanks
danny

Are you taking the brown inhalers regularly? Thing is, I don't. I went to the docs to get hold of a new blue inhaler for instant relief before going for a run, or playing squash. Doc told me I should be taking the brown inhaler regularly as well, even though my asthma is pretty mild, to improve 'endurance' (can't remember exactly what she said).

I'd imagine if you keep on track with the inhalers + regular runs (without pushing too hard if breathing gets harder), you would notice an improvement over time. I certainly have found myself running longer without my breathing becoming tight etc.

edit: Not sure about running 2 miles twice a day. I found myself just having a 20-30 minute run every odd day. Now i'm only really playing Squash once a week.

The brown has some steroids in it, and it actually had an adverse effect on myself.

Since I started mountain biking 3 weeks ago, my ashtma is already noticeable improving. Regular exercise and getting out of your dusty room is good for the airways :)

Also never take the blue in routine, only when you need relief then you can become less dependant.

Only used my blue one playing football.
Used to take 2 puffs before each half, in the tougher matches mabye an extra puff during.

Only really use the blue one when I feel tightness, I use the brown when I remember (mainly at night) and I don't wake up at night wheezing if I do. I was also told to use the brown one before doing exercise, i've tried this but it doesn't really help me, I use the blue one and i'm fine again though. :)

I can't imagine for a minute that running twice a day would be good for asthma, every other day I can understand but surely everyday would simply put to much strain to start with.

I'm sure if you build up your running to twice a day then you could benefit from it.

I would suggest having a chat to your Doctor or Asthma Nurse about the correct use of inhalers if you have doubts and for some advice on the running as well, I did when I used to run a lot and they did give me quite a few pointers to help me.

Also Brown inhalers are 12 hour long term relief and the blue are instant and generally you would always use both as directed by the doctor, after all it's not a good idea to change the prescribed dosage.;)
