Running costs

If you're 22 a 911 is a stupid idea, let's be honest. I'm all for buying stupid cars but there is a limit.

There is an easy solution here... Get a 987 for £15k. It's a Porsche, it's fast, it's not such a death trap and it's affordable.

It's not called the poor mans Porsche for no reason.

I agree a Boxster is a good shout but where is the death trap in a 997?

why is it a stupid idea? if you have the funds to purchase and run it then its not stupid.
Some people might want to do something else with the money, like store it away, others might want to stick on black in a casino.

We all facepalm people who buy a car then spend 10-15k modding it, then seeing them sell it for next to nothing compared to the money spent on it.
We all say 'imagine what you could have bought with that instead!'.

This is potentially an opportunity for someone to actually buy that something else instead.

Very hard to know when its all guessing i suppose to be fair to both sides of this argument.

The OP has already said for a 911 insurance for this guy (who ever he maybe) is £1600 a year. Now this make me think it's a foolish idea for a number of reasons. Firstly £1600 is a lot of money. Insurance is calculated using a few risk factors, obviously there is the owners location but well forget about that, then the is the likelihood of claiming and the cost of repair. A quote of £1600 suggests that likelihood of a claim when 22 years old is very high, there are obvious non-monetary issues associated with crashing... like killing yourself or someone else. It also suggests that the repair costs are high (as we all know), I'd worry that at 22 unless there is exceptional circumstances that he'd be better of living a little and not blowing almost all of his money on a car that he hadn't the ability or experience to get the enjoyment out of safely, I'm not going to tell him how to live though.

Get a Z4, a Boxster, a 335i... Something that'll bite you but it's teeth are a little less sharp. Something that he's much less likley to regret.

I think 1600 for a 911 is pretty good at 22.
FFS I live in a reasonable postcode and it would cost me 1500 to insure a crappy clio 172. :D

That little button that says PSM on the dash that we all feel the need to turn off, especially when 22.

Even with that off you have got to be going some to lose it, and i would say that once you have got to that point of losing it you would have lost a Z4 335 or a Boxster too, but i dont know for sure obviously.

Ok, fair enough. Don't tell any one but I've not driven a 911 before.

So many points of view.

I do see Fox's point of view but the kid has a tuned Focus ST at the moment, about 250bhp so spending £18k on an S3 would be a massive waste IMO. He wants to take a big step up from hot hatches into something really impressive and serious.

Yes a big part of it is image but at 22 who isn't worried about that. At the end of the day the image is important but 90% of people won't know the difference between a Boxster and a 911. They will see the Porsche badge on both cars and know he is doing well.

I don't know the ins and outs of his finances but from what he has said he's on 32k basic and depending on overtime can pocket an extra £200-£500 a month. From what I can tell thought your looking at 90% of this being his to spend on what he wants, save, drink, holidays, cars etc... He actually spends most of his time at his girlfriends house so it's not like he lives at home with mummy. Secure job with potential for promotion.

I actually thought £1600 for a 911 was good for insurance.

He's not set on a 911, or a Boxster S. He' set on a very fast, very flashy, very good car that he can afford and can afford to run. If you don't know a 911 or Boxster is the answer then what?

Well with that set of circumstances i stand by suggestion.

He puts 18k down and adds 12k to it and buys from an OPC a nice crispy 997 :)

That in my now sober opinion is a far better risk than buying a ropey 20k 996.

And 1600 quid at 22 insurance is a bargain.

FWIW my predicted 335i running costs are £150 a month including tax, tyres, servicing, warranty and misc. But thats based on sub 10k miles a year in a car new enough for comprehensive warranty throughout the ownership period, before you start getting too excited.

have you worked out a rough depreciation cost too? Surely depreciation would be another £150 (or probably quite a bit more) per month on top of that.

Yes I have, but its not something you pay monthly so it isn't part of the monthly cashflow side of things.

I dont think many go into such detail when looking at getting a new car or upgrading. It is good to plan ahead, but planning ahead to the extent where you're having to compromise (as per above) the chance to ''go wild'' is quite a sacrifice unless of course you're pretty sure that decent financial prospects are forseeable and buying something flashy etc is possible in the near future.

Intresting thread, people saying 750-1000 per month is crazy money ....

This just made me workout my car running costs,

Its really scary stuff, car only used for 6m in the summer, costs me around 750 a month, can't see how people get running costs of only 150 a month?

I require every year, 1 set of tyres, complete service including all fluids change, brakes and pads all round, also have a oil and filter change later in the year.

Only doing around 5000 Miles... ... Going to make me create a excel sheet the fox way:D

But what about replenishing your savings in preparation for the next car?
