In 30+ years, with hundreds of ports and thousands of meters of cable, I've had maybe one network cable go bad that wasn't fixed by re-punching the IDCs.
There are good reasons for installing more ports than you think you'll immediately need (unless there are cosmetic reasons not to), but not just-in-case a cable goes bad.
Agree, but your more likely to damage a cable in a domestic setting than commercial where proper cable management and trays are used, where a domestic install might be pulled, creased, hooped, pinched while being installed by a home user.
Don't bury cables in the walls if possible - bury a duct/conduit that can be plastered over and allow cable upgrade/replacement at a later date if necessary.
I buried phone and TV co-ax around my house in the mid 1990's - I now wish I'd put ducts/conduits because then I could easily add Ethernet cable as well.
