Running exe from a webpage

Is there a way to launch a program that's based on the computer, From a HTML web link?

We have a website setup and a link needs to be added to launch a specific program.

All I've got so far is the browser asking me to download the exe, Which isnt what i'm wanting. I'm wanting it to run. As if i'd clicked an icon.

I don't think you can directly, but I'm sure you can create a HTC or a HTA which scripts the execution of the EXE.

Having said that, you may need to change the security settings to Intranet on each browser.

It should be pretty easy to do in ASP, if you could go down that route?
