So I game on an old bog standard 1080p TV, but was thinking of upgrading as there's a few 4k tellies out about 3-400 quid.

My TV is OK for gaming but tempted to get a slightly bigger more modern one.

How bad is up scaling or forcing 1080p on a 4k screen for gaming ? Be nice to have a more modern panel with hdr and whatnot for films.

My current TV is a really old LG 37in that I paid about £300 for about 10 years ago.

Not looking to go up much in size, couple of inches as I have limited space but the tiny bezles will allow me to go up a size.

My PC hardware won't really allow me to go above 1080p for gaming without expensive upgrades.

Cheers

I don't have experience with PC gaming on a tv, but given the lack of responses so far I thought it might still be useful to reply.

I have gamed on my 4k tv using PS4 Pro and the Nintendo Switch. The PS4 Pro upscales to 4k so it's not a good comparison. The Switch however is 1080p and I have played quite a few games on it through the tv. I found it to run very well and the image certainly doesn't look any worse because of the native 4k resolution. It might well be improved through any native upscaling that my tv does, but I haven't used any other tv to make a fair comparison.

I would note that my tv is 65 inch, so if you are going for something smaller then it might be even better (as you are not stretching a 1080p image across such a large surface). My tv is also a 1st generation 4k model I think (4/5 years old), so something more modern might even work a bit better.

You might be able to run some older or less demanding games at 4k remember.

I have a 4k Philips Ambilight tv 43" I game on PC with at 1080p and well it's great at no point have I thought I need to get a 4K monitor, and the ambilight effect is really good.
