Running & muscles.

Hi guys, 1 Week ago I started my diet I'm not really overwieght but my gut had increased to the point where it was starting to show through my clothes, anyway yesterday I tried one of my favorite shirts on and to my pleasant surprise it fitted a lot better than it did just over a week ago. Anyway as well as cutting out all the junk food I ran 4.5 miles 3 days of last week + done plenty of pressups & some weights ( previously I had allways done 3 miles runs + weights ).



This is my plan - continue the diet for another couple of weeks then I want to try and get build some muscle, so therefore increase my calorie intake from good sources ( hopefully)

My question is are my 4.5 mile runs going to prevent or hinder me gaining muscle ?
 
How much pounds do you currently weigh?

As far as I know focus on burning as much as possible to burn off the excess fat then start working on the muscle when you have reached the right stage

No it won't, not unless you're looking to pack on every last ounce of muscle you can for a competition or something.

Running will put some muscle on your legs. Just be careful doing that sort of distance so early on because you might injure yourself, particularly if you're carrying a bit of weight. It's a lot of strain on your knees until they toughen up :)

I'm currently 12 stone so not really overweight just got a bit round my gut I want to loose :(

12stone, pffft that's nothing. I'm 6ft and weight 87kgs so roughly 13.5+ stone. I have a bit of podge, but aiming to lose the podge through weights, cardio and diet.

I'm 5' 10 and I dont look fat and thus will only be doing it for another week or so then it's more weights and I'll have to look at increasing my food intake a bit.

For you cardio and more importantly diet are where you'll see the difference allthough some weights wont hurt.

I was the same. Have just dipped under 13 stone, mainly through cardio. My diet has changed a bit but I still eat as much crap as before.

Still have a bit of a belly though so really need to sort my diet out to get rid of it.
 
quickest way to add or lose weight is by diet 1lb of fat = 3500 calories
as in weight can be controlled more quickly by more or less food than by upping calories expenditure ( unless your burning 5-6 k a day )

however its not the best way, its best ofc to use a combination of sensible nutrition and exercise

also its not all about weight its about body makeup.

who cares if you are 13st or 12 st as long as you are reasonable lean 10-20% bfp normal range for males. 10 -15% is a god area to be in for most guys.

as in you can be 12 st 34 inch waisted fatty or a 13 st 30 inch waisted and lean for example also ultimatly bmi is therefore not a good indicator unless you are looking at extremes of range.

the running you are doing is not enough to really hinder any weight gains in lean body mass thru weight training as long as you are fueling your self properly but not in any excess. as any wasted food / fuel will more easily be stored as fat. defeating the object.

everyone is slightly diferent and your specific calorie needs will be diferent than joe bloggs around the corner and remember even to many good calories if not used will still be stored ultimatly as fat if not utilized.

simple rule is eat enough to provide the fuel for your particular expenditure needs and utilize as many good natural products as poss train right and in the right quantity and quality and go by feel if you feel your fatter you probably are

if you feel tired your not getting optimum nutrition and so on

experiment with your dietary intake verses expenditure and see what suits you.

I run 3 times per week (25-30km total) and do weights 3 times as well (Stronglifts 5x5), I'm still putting on muscle and increasing my strength but over the last couple of weeks I have had to take the odd extra rest day. If you want to focus on one or the other than you will get better results but I enjoy both.

As others have said, if you want to build muscle then diet is very important, I'm trying out leangains at the moment and it seems to be working pretty well but I'm sure I'll hit a point where I need to eat more or exercise less as the intensity of the weights sessions increases.
