I'm in a bit of a dilemma. The bits and pieces of my new system started arriving today and hopefully the rest will arrive tomorrow. I'm currently on Dial up internet after moving home and BT wont turn on Broadband for another 2 weeks. So i'm gonna be pretty stuffed for getting the updates till then as it would likely take those two weeks to download them on this connection speed. I've never run a pc without them before so i'm wondering if i'm going to encounter any problems? Motherboard, GPU drivers etc i should be able to leave downloading overnight so will be fine in that respect.

If you got all the driver discs then don't worry about it until you get broadband,
You won't have latest drivers but they will work

What release of XP will you be installing? If it is SP1 then ensure that the firewall is turned on before connecting to the net but i would still install good AV software (AVG, Avast)and perhaps a software firewall such as Sygate. If it is SP2 then you should be reasonably safe but until your BB is activated

If you have SP1 and download that SP2 file, wil it be okay to instal windows, SP2, then get updates because I will miss SP1 updates?

/slightly confused look

If you dont have SP2 installed.. You would need to install it and the install all essential updates in the link.

Sorry

I mean. If my CD has Windows XP SP1 on and straight after the installation I install SP2 will I miss any essential updates that would have needed to be downloaded before SP2?

Can't you nLite a Windows CD with RyanVM's Update Pack and your drivers?
Look here for a guide how to slipstream SP2 & the Update Pack & drivers etc. to a bootable XP Install CD.
This will mean you won't have anything to download and you will be safer online with anti virus & built in firewall.

no you wont, sp2 contains all fixes before it..

each 'fix' is just an updated file or registry key, so you'll just have the newest versions (well the sp2 versions anyway)

tbh, if you're runing SP2, you'll be ok.. just don't leave connected all *** time
