Running Q6600 24/7...

At 1.5+v... is this safe?

The CPU temps in my new case are less than 60c under S@H load even when the room is hot.

Im just worried that running the CPU @ 100% with 1.5+v going through it will kill it verrrry quickly...

I heard that it's heat that kills the chip etc but just a bit worried that im going to come home from work one day and see my chip melted or something

If it's safe then I might try scraping a little more of an overclock out of it

only thing that will kill the chip is really the temps.

Doing very well to put 1.5v through it and still be under 60 degrees - but go for it - i've had mine @ 1.45v for 6 months now 24/7 and no problems with it.

You dont really want to be running over 70C 24/7 60 should be fine.

I assume that you have the old B3 chip, otherwise you wouldn't be asking this

I would stick with stability rather than a few more Mhz, you're more likely to get higher temps and a possible BSOD the higher you clock

Thats vdroop. Voltage will be different under load as well.

1.384v is my voltage under load

Ironically at idle the voltage is 1.424V (wierd, huh?). This is confirmed by Asus PC Probe II.

Hi guys/gals, cheers for the replies!

Not sure how much i'm putting through it in the BIOS but it's 1.504v idle in windows and flashing between 1.480 and 1.488v under load and this is in cpu-z.

Chip is a Q6600 G0 stepping but a VID of 1.3125v so needs the volts to stay nice and stable.

I had it at 3550mhz or something like that back along but dropped it back a bit due to random crashes everynow and again. My plan was to knock the voltage up one more and try it again at what I had it at... reckon that will be ok? :confused:

New case is an Antec 1200 and can deffinatly say that they are amazing at keeping things cool! Quiter than my last case and 10c better temps... with all but the top fan on low

Had to mod the side fan slightly to get it to fit with my TRU but other than that all perfect

im thinking about buying the antec 1200 and a true, what did you have to do to make it fit?

Well the top of the fan touches the TRU before it's on. You have to cut half of one corner off the fan.

So where the screw goes in.... kinda hard to explain.

Tis not. I used some snips and it just sheared off.

That's not the fan I used on the case, that was my "test" fan to make sure it would fit

Will try and take a pic of how close it is later

Which program are you using to measure temperatures? Doesnt coretemp measure high on quads? I was in the earl 70's on mine, then used realtemp(iirc) and it dropped to mid 60's so i'm happy, apart the same random crashes and it randomly deciding to only crunch on two cores...

Am using Coretemp yes.

Well with the room temp at around 26c the Q6600 is only at 58-60c on all cores in coretemp with the new "1 notch" higher voltage and 3560mhz.

Might try for the legendary 3.6GHz but last time I did that it need a silly increase in vcore so might just leave it where it is and be happy

Haven't had any random crashes for a while but I did lower the O/C by a bit a few weeks ago. Hoping that the bump in vcore will be enough to keep them away :cool:

EDIT: So just to ask again, i'm all good having my CPU run at 100% load, 24/7 with 1.488v pumping through it with temps of 60c on each core?

For what its worth, core temps are not the concern, T-Junction temps should be the focus. If your =< 30 degrees C from T-Junction MAX, that is awsome, =< 20 from T-Junction Max, then you should be getting worried.

[EDIT] - If it's stable on the vCORE you set, and your T-J-Max ( not the store ladies

) is 20-30 from limit, run that puppy !! [/EDIT]
