Running same Google account on two phones?

Hello, I know Android gives you a ONE time option to restore a backup when you get a new phone;

What happens if/when you leave the old phone active? How does Google manage backup from two difference devices or doesn't it?

I'm sure (but could be wrong and getting confused with Samsung backups) that it keeps different backups for each device.

I'm running my Google account on 15 devices at the moment. Google sometimes gets confused; initially I thought it was just on rooted devices with a different ROM but it has 'lost' a bog standard phone and Tablet. They were visible in the Play Store but the backups weren't available to restore even though it was switched on on both devices.
