Hi,

I am probably about to buy a MacBook and am looking for some further information on running XP, ideally using parallels.

Do I need to buy a retail version of XP? Do you need to set up firewalls and virus software in the same way you would on a PC?

You will need a legitimate install disk, whether it is OEM or retail.

You will still most likely need antivirus software and the windows firewall should be ok.

But in honesty, what you require really all depends on what you intend to do with the Windows installation.

It is a breach of Microsoft's EULA to use an OEM copy with any machine other than the machine that held the original installation of that licensed software. You'll need a retail copy, Jambo.

You'll need to install everything you'd normally install on a Windows machine, including firewall and anti-virus. A Macbook running XP is no different from a Dell running XP as far as software is concerned. I recommend you use the Windows partition for Windows-only software like games and stick to the slickness and security of OS X for your other needs. :)

Erm...you can buy an OEM disc which hasn't been installed on any other machine

Besides, I'd be amazed if ANYONE would pay £176.99 for a 5 year old OS, and pay for more than one copy. I couldn't care what the EULA says for my OEM copy, i've used it on 2 separate machines - not at the same time obviously - and it activated over the net fine. If I ever need XP on my Mac i'll be using the same copy on here and convert my PC fully to Linux or something :p

I understand you. What I meant is that one cannot take the install disk and license number from an OEM machine one might have already. If I bought a Dell or some other beige box retail machine in 2002 and got an XP license with it then decided to put Linux on that machine there is a vacant XP license. However, I would not be able to use that for Parallels/Boot Camp because it is against the rules.

Lol, I really want a mac. I'm jealous of all you mac users! :D
A nice iMac g5 would be good!

Let's stay on the right side of the law now, shall we?

My link was all legal, but hey if you don't wan't it! :D
The guide assumes you have purchased "mac osx" legally
