Running your own DNS server.

Hi,

I have my Linux NAS box which I plan to have set-up as my private network DNS server.

I plan on setting up the following, any advice or suggestions ?

NAS
- Primary local DNS server
- - - - Points to Google DNS servers

ISP router
- Secondary DNS server
- - - - Points to FreeDNS servers

I cannot guarantee the NAS will always be on and the ISP router is a bit slow sometimes for DNS. My ISP DNS servers are also terrible.

I see a couple of issues.

Is the NAS going to be your internal DNS server and forwarding non internal requests to the Internet, or is it simply going to be forwarding all requests out to the Internet?
If it's both, then what happens to your internal DNS when the NAS is off?

If it's just a forwarder, is there much point as you are adding an extra layer for no really benefit (unless you are caching and for a home user that's of little benefit)

The idea is to have the NAS (pri) and ISP router (sec) DNS servers.

Local addresses they would forfil themselves. External addresses they would forward to either Open DNS or Google.
