Someone did a comparison of points they'd have got if FP1 was the result against real points...

Bottas/Hamilton really stand out.

I don't know what choice Bottas has really. He must be all too aware that Hamilton is a bit of a juggernaut over the course of Friday-Sunday in that he starts slow and momentum just keeps building.

He must know his best chance is just to get as fast as he can as quickly as he can and hope it works out.

Though if there is any circuit I'm backing Bottas to get the job done on, it's this one

But in free practice, you're not racing against other drivers, which is where Bottas is weak. It's not as if his FP performance matches his qualifying, and his qualifying doesn't match his race results.

I know there is a lot of apathy towards Bottas. But maybe peeps ought to think about where he came from and what his role is within Merc. Plucked from Williams to replace Rosberg, who couldn't face another year of trying to beat Hamilton because he knew he didn't have it in him to do it.
Bottas is the only driver since then that has come anywhere near to beating Hamilton over a season. Yes, maybe other drivers could have beat Hamilton......................F1 though is full of "could have's". The fact is, all those could have's weren't driving a Merc............................Bottas was and is.

Plucked from Williams

Who were the third best team in 2015, and the 5th best in 2016, not the no hopers of the couple of years.

Bottas is the only driver since then that has come anywhere near to beating Hamilton over a season.

Wrong. Vettel has been much closer.

Like most people, I like Bottas, I just don't think he's that good a driver. I'd like top see the most promising drivers given a chance in the best seats.

I've been reading a thread on r/f1feederseries which had the consensus Verstappen is the greatest driver since Schumacher.

When you think about it, Hamilton has had some top class teammates who have won WDCs in Alonso, Button and Rosberg. I feel Bottas is the best of the rest in this regard, he's fast and consistent without having that last bit that makes a world class driver.

The stat that really surprises me for Bottas is his wins - just 8, that's fewer than Max Verstapen has achieved and he's never had the luxary of the dominant car. And against Hamilton - you need to go some way back to find a season where he didn't have more wins in one season than bottas has in his entire F1 career. I do like Bottas - I'm just surprised he is statistically so far away from his team mate.

Yeah that lap was a gut check. Green in the first sector then just went HAM on the other two.

He seems to do that on a few tracks, protect tyres at the start then give them a good seeing to as the lap develops.

You also see Ham playing around with the different sectors and different speeds; I guess he feels how the car performs with different temps or lines and then eventually start to link them together... but never really revealing his true pace until Q2/Q3.
