Good mornin!

I have just bought a MX5 and it is has got a bit of surface rust on the rear arches. After some vigours poking (fnar fnar) it feels solid so instead of welding fresh metal in I am going to try a rust remover/convertor on it and see how it goes.

I have used hammerite's rust convertor before but can anyone recommend a better one?

thanks

Danny

Bilt hamber sell good stuff, personally i would save the £20 a put it towards getting the sills done.

If it is still solid you can get each side done for £100-£150, which includes grinding the arches.

Bilt Hamber Deox-Gel.

Ignore recommendations on random other stuff like Krust and other converters. You don't need to convert rust, you need to kill it and eat it with Deox-Gel then get it protected with something like their Electrox spray.

Excellent products and reasonably priced.

I wasn't too impressed with the deox gel tbh. Was incredibly difficultto get an even layer like they insist on, and the metal didn't really look any different at all after the application :/

I use Kurust (the Hammerite one too), brilliant stuff. Sand/wire brush the loose rust off, sand again till relatively smooth, wipe down, brush on, leave. Prime, paint, job's a goodun'!

When I sort out my corrosion on my inner sill (rear offside) and brake master cylinder servo mount (advisories on Corsa MoT), I plan to angle grind, jenolite (only because I still have some left) for rust conversion, zinc prime and paint.

Going to do the same on my Spitfire, probably over winter whilst it's laid up, although I haven't found any rust yet.

Kind regards

Clearly you didn't apply it correctly as per instructions as there are countless documented examples out there of it working just as described.

I applied mine with a snapped half of a hacksaw blade then wrapped the Gel layer in clingfilm. Very simple and does a stunning job.

I wouldn't use Krust and convert it and paint over. Leaving rust there with a converted coat is the last thing you should do if you cannot remove it as it will come back, it's like a cancer. Get as much wire brushed or sanded off then get the Deox-Gel on to take it off, then coat with the electrox primer to seal in and prep for paint. Bilt Hamber really do seem to have done their research and have some good chemists working for them.

Yup, works perfectly for that. But then again it only comes ~1litre tubs.

Good to have for any other rust removal etc.
