Rusty rifles

The camp is near Carrollton (an hour south of Canton). I don't mind ordering stuff online for delivery, those silica gel cans from Cabela's look ideal.
Ahh, you're only 60 miles away from Wheeling, West Virginia.

The store alone is worth the trip. You will be awestruck. :D

Call ahead and make sure they have what you're looking for, though. They might have better solutions also.

Stainless steel should not rust surely ?
If it's in contact with another steel and it's damp you'll get a rusty corrosion where the two are touching. It's an electrolytic corrosion where a small current is induced by the dissimilar metals.

It's like if you have stainless steel cutlery in the dishwasher you might notice some rusty spots on the knives, it's where another piece of cutlery was touching it when it was all hot and wet.

So are the barrels in a metal rack? Maybe it's the mild steel rack causing it in the damp.

It's called stainless steel for a reason, not stainproof, because it stains less then ordinary steel, but it still can corrode/rust.

As for WD40, i remember a thread on here ages ago where someone mentioned that WD40 actuly evaporates and leaves behind a very thin film of oil that continues to protect the metal after the initial evaporation. So it should protect metal, but with something as expensive as a firearm i would suggest getting a proper oil designed to be used as a gun oil.

Since you are in the US, can you not simply go to one of the MANY gun stores and get some advice from some experts?

Not there yet, I don't go until June 2nd, so I haven't even seen how they've survived the winter yet (in storage at the director's house) :( The work is 24/7 and the camp is pretty remote as well so I don't get many opportunities to go shopping outside. The more research I can do before I arrive the better prepared I will be for ordering the right stuff when the season starts.

As for the metal-metal contact, the barrels sometimes contact each other in the cabinet, but nothing else. Good point to know, I'll get some dowel to make proper spacers within.

childrens summer camp and shooting .22s?!

only in america :D

As an air cadet I fired live ammunition from a .22 converted, single shot, bolt action Lee Enfield No. 8 rifle. And better still, fired the L98-A1, an SA80 derived weapon firing high velocity 7.62mm NATO ammunition.

Stainless steel should not rust surely?

Marine grade won't, it's also not magnetic, and quite soft. There are various grades for different purposes.

Isn't the L98A1 5.56mm and not 7.62mm? I know there are some conversion kits for the weapon so it is able to fire .22, but i didnt know it was possible to convert it to 7.62.

Can't argue with the 69ster.
