Hey guys and gals got a bit of a predicament.
I've got myself a motorbike and has started to get some rust on it's exhaust. :( It started appearing after I went out on it in snow (not a good idea anyway) and the grit salt got on it.
I cleaned it up using some crazy product my uncle lent me and well its come back.
I really want the rust out but I know its practically cancer for metal.

It's a crome exhaust which might make things difficult.

I found this rust remover "Linky" and I didnt know if that would work.

Any help would be very help me out. The guy at halfords said I can't do anything.

Cheers

If a chromed part is rusting then it suggests the chroming is not of a very good quality, which is par for the course on many jap bikes. You will never completely stop it rusting in this case, you just need to keep on top of it.

Probably bought a mild steel one to replace the original mild steel one. To be honest your best bet is to get your hands on a stainless one, but it depends on the value of the bike as to whether it's worth doing.

All the mild steel exhausts on bikes I've had are/were mullered, only the stainless ones stay nice.

British roads muller bikes, I gather we're one of not many countries at all that salt their roads.

My brand new Buell started rusting after a few weeks riding during December. Ive managed to get on top of it, always wash/lube it after every ride.

Wash after every ride? :/

thats standard fair if you want to keep your bike looking good....

not good to leave it in the shed/garage after a run in the winter then come back a week later ,it'll be covered in furry metal....

although my bike is 8 years old now there is very little rust on it and I ride all year round, although thats not down to me being a good cleaner , it's just the bike is so good at resisting the weather and it's Italian as well.... ;)

The difference here is that my bike is used for multiple rides per day, every day. If I were to only ride it weekly then a weekly wash would suffice for keeping it neat, and would be easy to do. Making the commitment to wash my bike every day (after every ride) would be difficult.

Can't I just use some rust remover to get rid of the rust, then spray paint the exhaust with high temprature spray to lock out the rust and also giving the exhaust a nice finish?

You can use high-temperature paint, yeah. To get the best results though you'll have to properly prepare the pipe beforehand.

My SR125 never stopped rusting. The cheap chrome was constantly sprouting little flecks of rust but then again I did use it just about every single day for a year regardless of weather.

Why can’t the manufactures produce a bike to the same standard as a car? You don’t see people worrying about the car after a run in winter spraying it down & applying lube it’s a good job to because the water would freeze across the road & we would all end up on our arse.
