Hello

Looking to build a new computer within the next month and I was recommended a Silverstone RV02 although after looking around I think I prefer the FT02 but its basically the same layout inside. Anyway after doing some looking around at some peoples builds I stumbled across a few threads where people were saying graphics cards with heat pipes were causing some problems for them such as overheating or just getting much higher temperatures being at that angle.

Thread 1 In this thread someone says about there GTX 480 having strange temperatures especially across the heat pipes.

Thread 2 In this thread I believe its a 5970 having overheating problems.

There were a few other threads but I cant find them at the moment but was basically people with similar issues. My question is, as I would be using SLI 480s has anyone got or has had a single/sli/crossfire cards which has heat pipes in these cases and have you had any problems?

Steve

I dont think it matters if it exhausts out the case or blows it in, I think the problem lies with-in the heat pipes themselves.

"There's a huge, and potentially fatal, design flaw going around computer forums about the ft02 right now that the heat pipes are bursting on gpu's and motherboards becasue mavity is working against the flow of them"

I have heard about this before, with the orientation of those cases like the raven and ft02, As I am also in the hunt for a new case I think I will avoid these cases myself and stick to the "standard" design for a case, just to be on the safe side!

Thanks for the replys guys, would be nice to hear from sid488 and see what he thinks about this and what temps he's getting.

Im hoping its all ok as I really like the case but if there's some dount Ill probably just end up going with the HAF X.

I am using 2 reference crossfired 6950s overclocked and unlocked on my FT02B-W and max temperature I have seen is 80c after 3 hours of playing Crysis.

Although i am not on SLI i am using a GTX580 usually idling about 40-45c in a very hot room and load about 75c highest i seen which was in Witcher 2.(usually about 65-70c)

It's cooling my GTX580 about 5c less than my Antec 902 which had decent cooling.I am adding a 2nd sometime soon so will see how that goes but if you are worried so much you could go SLI GTX570 instead.

If you think about it, even if the GFX card "bursting" from the pipes. At the end of the day "hot air rises" so with the AP blowing up the air can only go one direction. That up ^ so doubt you would get bad temps that way. I dont have SLI and hardly have a cool card and i am idling at 40 and topping around 75 as well.

Thanks again for the replies, makes me feel abit better knowing non of you have had the problem :)

Already have one 480 so dont really want to buy two 570's.

To be honest, I think this case is truly amazing shame its so expensive and lack of connectivity options, wish Silverstone upgraded it.

Most graphics cards with heatpipes will work just fine in FT02/RV02 including all reference designs by NVIDIA and AMD. We always use their top cards as part of our product development so we do have cards such as GTX 480/580/590 and Radeon HD 5970/6970/6990 to test with while both NVIDIA and AMD also have our cases in their labs.

Regarding the GTX 480, it is indeed a very hot card. The reference design heatpipes can get hot to touch, but that is normal and shows they are working. As a second opinion, you can check out the experience here by Kyle over at HardOCP:

The link showing the person having problem with the 5970 was using a non-reference design card from Sapphire that used a cooler with heatpipes oriented perpendicular to the floor and the end touching the heat source higher than the other end. So this is the the reason why it performed poorly. We have a Q&A page that also explains this issue:

As an easy rule, simply look for graphics cards that have heatpipes oriented parallel to the floor and you should be fine.

Thanks for comming on and confirming that they do work just fine. I shall definitely be ordering one!

I'm running 2 reference 470's in the FT-02 and have to say I've had no issues with cooling.

It's an excellent case, you wont regret getting one.

Sorry to be a noob but what does it mean when you refer it to be a reference card?
