RV7XX Software Overclocking is HERE!!

Well I've just finished adding my 4870 to my water loop. The temps are now down from 76~ degrees idle to 32~ degrees, and load is down from 86~ degrees to 38~ degrees with the MCW60.

Another thing i noticed was that the greatest stable overclock i could manage on the stock cooler was 800 on the core, and 820 just caused ati vpu recover to activate the second a 3 app was loaded. With the waterblock fitted however i can manage 850 core with no artifacts whatsoever and even 860 doesn't cause vpu recover to activate but there is some artifacting. This would seem to show that the cards clock a lot better when they are adiquatly cooled.

i've had this problem but fixed it.

but first tell me do you have a modded bios on the cards?

I have used modded bioses and have then reflashed a stock sapphire bios from the net (forgot to save mine .. doh) . I cant be certain whether this stock bios has not been modded in any way.

Thanks for that! :)

But seriously dude . . . . . wheres the pics? . . . . . . . WTF!!!!

Haha now I bet you may be considering some vMods maybe? imagine getting a little more juice running to the GPU and Memory along with that cooling, man that would be extremely tempting prospect no?

I might try and get some pics tomorow, however the only camera that i have access is the awful one on my phone (.3 mega pixel), so I'm not awfully sure how well the pics would come out but I might give it a shot tomorow anyway.

And yeah I may have a go at some pencil mods this weekend ;)

Currently testing core at 810Mhz, 2 mins so far with ATi Tools, Core running at 90 degrees, need manual control over the fan though but cant with AMD GPU Clock Tool as it causes a bug with overdrive so you cant choose profiles!!

Was reading the overclocking thread over at Xtremesystems and apparently you can get higher core without clocking the memory, in Crysis I failed at 800/1100, but testing with ATi Tool 5mins in and no errors with 810/900, going to overclock memory seperate to see the max seperate clocks, need some more voltage asap really.

with the modded bios at least (MSI 160/500 idle version), i've found that powerplay gets stuck on the 2nd card in crossfire after a fresh boot which stops the clock tool from working.

to fix this run 3dmark/furbench for a few seconds and for some reason the 2nd cards powerplay kicked in (verified through gpu-z) and i could run the clock tool properly again.

happens to me in both XP64 and Vista64

I had read about the trick of running a game for a few seconds but it just doesn't work for me. im running msi 160/500 now and I can clock the second card but not the first, before and after running a quick 3D app.

I guess i will have to keep upping the bios clock to find my max.

What are people stable 24/7 clocks on the stock cooler with 4870?

Pretty much what ATI Overdrive sets it to. I get the occasional driver reset with DiRT and GRID at anything over 780 core, and artifacting in Crysis and HL2 etc on anything over 1090-1100.

The fan profile hacks aren't worth it either, since even at silly low duty (25% ish) I can still easily hear it over my case fans, and auto mode lets it slightly spin up briefly now and then to balance the heat output anyway.

this is mine at 780

Whats up with mine?

Vista giving me a pap score?

whats your 06 score?

in vista?

cheers

Tbh i think with 3dmark06 ati could not care as a 8800gts can out score a 4870 but not in vantage which for me is the new benchark we should be looking at. The only thing is vantage is also to much about cpu and not about gpu performance as much as it should be. Thing is though in games a 8800gts heavily overclocked can't touch a 4870 in real world gaming so the scores don't mean nothing these days.

3D Mark 06?

It should install normally, although the OpenAL installer that came with the setup file is a bit buggy and didn't work properly. Luckily there's a separate installer for OpenAL you can download to get 3D06 to run.

Hmmmm, this gave me some serious problems :/ Was running run at 700/1150 since I got it. Checked its stability before using this tool, passed fine, installed it, overclocked, hung, restarted, checked again and now its only stable at 670/1115.

*Checking for stability with ATI CCC - "Test Custom Clock"

What did you use to test stability? Never go off the CCC test. Use something a lot more punishing like 3DMark Vantage/06 or ATI Tool.

You may have damaged your card, I did the exact same thing ears ago on an Nvidia card. And ever since, it was never as good at OC'ing, and gradually just got worse.

800/1150 for me. Tried 825 but crashed running the Crysis benchmark right away.

Replaced with AC S1 + 92mm fan and it went through at 825/1150 fine. Just nudging up the core to find the max on there and then the mem.
