Hi,

My mate has sold his old Audi as he will be spending the next 6 months working from home.

He however wants a project. He is looking at getting some RWD fun.

Wants to spend £5K max but is undecided which way to go. He is looking for a track car/fast road car. He is interested in either buying a decent car straight out and spending a little on tuning or getting an older car and building himself a kit car.

I've pointed out the RX7 as an obvious choice or a supra, both have lots of potential and come in under budget. You've then got the choices of getting a 4x4 2.8i sierra or a BMW for the kit car option.

Anyone any suggestions for other cars to check out?

Also, decent websites that may be of interest?

I'd go for some sort of kit car of maybe an older elise (I'm not sure if they can be had for 5k tho).

The 200sx is worth looking at also, get a nice one for 2 grand or so, then spend the rest on roll cage, etc.

Is there a 'recognised' path of modification for the E36 Evo? Or, being NA is it a case of spend lots to get a bit. (As opposed to many turbo'd things having a bit of boost increase etc)

Im going to stick my head on the block here and say no to an M3 evo. The Vanos will be over a grand if it goes wrong. The older M3 is however a fantastic little car and can be tuned quite nicely. Plus there is a cheeky turbo for it to take it into astronomical fun.

Wouldn't have an 200SX for a trackday car, bit largey bargey. M3 EVO is financial suicide at 5k budget. MX5 with a turbo? There are ones for sale with it done, or get it done under budget

yes, carbon plenum,284 cams, full system with race cats, updated rod bolts, viscous fan removal, remap.if the engines working well you can get a good 350bhp+.doesn't sound much but it will shift!
I have a standard m3 Evo which will happily post low to mid 5 second 0-60 times and around 12 to the ton all day long and hammers the limited at an indicated 161mph(airfield day).they are cheap as chips ATM and the vanos scares aren't as bad as people make out, they rarely fail just get noisy which mine has been for the last 20k miles,no loss of performance or failure just a slight rattle at low revs.I will say though, you still have to budget for running a £40k car!

Might need to bust the budget but I'd go for a Caterham. You simply cannot have more fun on the track at their price level IMO.

Have you been in a modified one, having been passenger at 150+ mph they certainly don't feel "bargey".

Yes I have one (standard), once modified they are a whole new beast.

I guess a Porsche GT3 RS must be a barge aswell at 1375kgs considering a 200 is just over 100kgs lighter.
