RX100 iii Still the Compact of choice?

So, just popped into JL in the Trafford Centre and had a play with both. Both are lovely cameras and not a hugely massive size difference in the flesh, but the Lumix is definitely not pocket material (the flash is, thankfully, detachable):

So, first up the Sony, definitely small

But also slightly awkward for my sized hands

To get to the back buttons on the right hand side moved the camera away from my palm and therefore had the camera in my finger tips almost, which really affected by grip

The Lumix is a bit bigger

but felt a lot more sturdy in my hand and generally more comfortable maneuvering round the dials and buttons

There were a few other niggles with the Sony such as the EVF having to be pulled up and away from the body and not sitting "right" when I took the camera to my eye (although, admittedly, that could be my face rather than the camera's fault :p)

After having a play, even with the higher cost of the Lumix and larger size it just felt "better" in my hands so I think we may have a winner, so now its just a case of black or silver !

Thanks all again for your input :) cheers

As you aren't in a rush to buy, I would wait to see what Sony have to say at a press briefing on Thursday, there is an expectation that they could announce the RX100mk4. Rumours are still going strong that it will be a micro four thirds sensor, I don't know how they are going to be able to keep the camera body the same compact size if this is the case.

Yeah I think the same as you SAS, even with my small hands I find the Sony like a bar of soap. Both are excellent so like most things camera related it comes down to feel for me. As for colour I prefer the silver :)

Picked up the LX100 a few weeks back (was £449 + £50 cash back on the amazon daily deals), great camera for the size. Is quite a bit thicker than my RX100 but photo quality is superb.

The only bad things about the LX100 is the detachable flash (would prefer it to pop out) and no USB charging, which I think is ridiculous. For the kind that kind of money would expect touch screen as well tbh!

I use my Olympus EPM-2 with kit lens as a pocket camera without issue, but I don't wear skinny tight hispter jeans.

The general use case is skiing or ski touring when I want light gear, hiking, casual strolls in a park photographing family, travelling super light. I have never once felt the EPM2 too big , and that is bigger than he LX100.

If I really want something unobtrusive then the RX100 would stlll be too bug, it isn't a shirt pocket camera either. This is when the smart phone comes in because you have it with you anyway.

Believe me I also don't wear skinny hipster jeans :p

BigRiver have it in for £490 and looks like the cashback and extended warranty would apply (ive emailed Panasonic to confirm) - if so i think ill pull the trigger

Only minor gripe is that it is the black version only, but no show stopper :)

Hmmmm, ****** Amazon :(

Opened the box and it has an EU plug on the charger, no biggie

Six instruction manuals in selected European languages, OK, still not a massive issue

Try to register Serial Number with Panasonic (the camera qualifies for £50 cash back and extended 5 year warranty) - guess what it appears to be a German registered camera - so can as you need a UK serial number :(

Spoken to Amazon and they are going to arrange a UK spec / registered camera to be delivered and swap out the German one, the wait continues .......

Hmm, guess it's no different to OcUK selling EU stock and throwing a UK kettle lead in, except camera manufacturers warranty coverage is a lot more complicated.

Although I'm pretty sure Panasonic offer a pan-European warranty or somesuch.

Hope you get a UK model soon!

For what it's worth, I've found my local Panasonic Store to be excellent at price matching and sorting out stock. Might be an idea to give your local one a call if Amazon are gonna take a while.

If it was just the lead and / or the manuals i wouldn't be that fussed but potential warranty issues (with the German serial number) along with that stopping me claiming the £50 cashback and extended warranty is enough for me to get a swap-out.

Hopefully they are looking to get UK stock in early next week

Fingers crossed ! :)

Well by way of an update - the 5th came and went

They changed the date to the 8th, which came and went

They changed the date to the 15th, which came and went

Then, after suggesting they supply me with a lead and confirm the camera is eligible for the warranty and cashback and several chase up emails to them Amazon have agreed for me to buy a lead (from Amazon) and they will refund the cost of the lead - Done

They have also confirmed Panasonic will honor the warranty and cashback

This is slightly odd as Panasonic have said they won't..............

They acknowledge that the camera (and my purchase of the camera) complies will all their T&Cs except the 3 digit suffix to the model number

But I now have an email from Amazon confirming the camera is eligible.

I need to wait another week or so (28 days after purchase) to register on the Panasonic website and will be fun if it doesn't accept it and Amazon have advised it is eligible ...................

Aside from that, having a bit more of a play with the camera and really liking it and its portability :D
