Ryzen 5 5600X compatibility with Win 7 (or just go for 11600K?)

If you are determined to go ahead with it there are a few resources such as https://www.ntlite.com/community/index.php?forums/general.5/

It is one of the reasons I'm sticking with my X79 setup, despite having a variety of systems including Intel 11th gen based, Windows 10 is just a steaming pile never mind 11 and way too often if I actually want a system I can rely on I have to come back to my Windows 7 systems.

I'm now looking at setting up virtual machine as it seems fairly straightforward, so thanks all for the pointers.

I'll try it with my current setup to see how it goes and delay the upgrade for a while.

TBH I'm fine with Windows 10 as my normal OS, as I'm so used to using it at work.

Hi, thanks for the response, but are you running Win7 with the Ryzen chip?

My 1700 has issues with win95 in vmware. Know issue on zen1

Win7 worked for me but it was not a fresh install. Pulled drive out from my old pc and out into ryzen pc and it booted and worked fine after just needed to install some drivers

In terms of [very] legacy software and virtual machines unless you specifically need Windows 9x for some reason Windows 7 32bit with the DOS VDM installed will pretty much work with most stuff which you might otherwise install an older version of Windows for. There are ways to make the 16bit sub-system install on 64bit variants but I've not found it works without some issues.
