Ryzen 7 4800H TUF A17 - how hot should it be?

Just got one of these laptops and it seems to be running quite hot - clocked the CPU at a max of 94C just playing the Sims, albeit with maxed-out settings (my daughter, honest

!)! Seems to run at mid 70s just in general usage.

Is this normal? It is sitting on a flat wooden desk. We even elevated it slightly to help with air flow. The room is hot but still...

I think it is rated at up to 105C but if it is hitting 94 under fairly low usage I wonder how long the chip will last...maybe there are bios settings I should tweak?

So I had a look in the BIOS and there were no CPU performance options. I thought I would update to the latest version anyway - it's on v302 and the latest one on the Asus website is 304. The EZflash tool in the Bios had no Internet option (not sure why) so I downloaded the file and extracted it to a USB. The file is named "FA706IU-AS.304". Anyway, I've tried to get the EZflash to run the update a number of times and keep getting "selected file is not a proper Bios" message. I tried formatting the USB to FAT (apparently that can be an issue).

Any ideas? I read that these files are usually *.CAP - should I just rename it? I'm nervous of bricking the machine.

There's not much out there to compare to but I've been eyeing up the Dell G15 SE with the 4800H. The only real thermal benchmark I've found is this: https://hothardware.com/reviews/dell-g5-15-se-review?page=4 .

It seems that on the Dell, CPU and GPU temps are stable around 84* regardless of load. I would say your laptop is running slightly hotter than I would expect.

Yeah, I queried it with Asus and they think there's something wrong...they don't think it should be hitting those temps.

GPU is meant to be quite weak though isn’t it ?

Seems to be matching the RTX 2060 for most games. It's about as powerful as you can get for around £1k

Does it have a discrete GPU? Isn't it referring to the on-board graphics in the 4800 CPU?

Just checked on my lad's Zephyrus and with 100% load across all cores the max temp was 82.2°C

Yeah, I think there was something up with that laptop, or it just isn't a great design. Given that I want to go 17" I think I might look at an intel laptop - the newer 10875H chip seems to be up there with the 4800H for gaming and there are more configs available...better screens and RTX cards.

They also run hot, so not sure you will get much benefit if lower temps are what you are looking for.

Maybe they do in differently designed laptops. Or maybe there was something wrong with that particular one. It sounds like it is not typical. There are limited choices atm if you want a 17" laptop.

Sustained 100% load at 82°C is significantly cooler than the Intel I7-6820HK, I7-7820HK, and the I7-9750H. I haven't had hands-on with a 10th gen Intel yet.

After watching other reviews on Ryzen 7 laptops, it seems like they all run very hot. Another Dell G5 video shows the CPU running at 100° during stress testing and in the 90°s during gaming.

It's disappointing seeing as they are 7nm chips and theoretically should run cooler.
