Ryzen 9 3900x Upgrade 5900x/5700x3d, AM5 upgrade, or just wait

Well it looks like I've suddenly got a bit of cash free and I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading my 3900x to one of the newer AM4 CPU's and if so which one. I used my PC for gaming but i also use it Fusion 360. Would I be better off with a 5900x given the multi use case or would the 5700x3d be the better choice (kinda fell I need a 5900x3d but they don't exist for some reason).
Or would I be better off waiting, saving a little and going AM5 but then the same question applies on the Ryzen 9 or 7x3d and is it worth the cost of a new Motherboard, DDR5 and the increased cost of the CPU?
Or am I best just stick with what I've got and waiting for AM5 at this point?
I've currently got a 5570XT GFX card but will be getting a 5070 ti or 8800xt as soon as I can get my hands on them if that makes a difference.
One thing to add is I want to upgrade my Nephews new PC as I'm getting him a 3060 ti for it but the i7 8700 is a little old so I want him to have my CPU so I'll have to buy him a motherboard at the very least if I don't upgrade mine so thats something to factor into the cost.

If your upgrading your nephew's pc just give him your CPU mobo, memory and start a fresh by moving to AM5 .

Budget is always the deciding factor but your looking around £400 for 7600, b650 motherboard and 32gb 6000mhz memory. Then you move up depending on CPU choice.

Ive had my 5900x since launch and its still going great if your mobo can take it id probably get a used 5000 series as you'll end up having to get dd5 ram

If you are going to buy a new mobo for your nephew, Go with what micky said.

5700x3d is a fantastic CPU for £170

what resolution are you planning on gaming at?

I've got one eye on that but whilst I know it's best for gaming I'm not sure if I'd lose out on the Fusion 360 side of things as that struggles half the time as it is so losing cores seems like it would make things worse. It's a shame there's not a 5900x3d as that's what I feel I want

I try to game at 4K on my TV when I can. My poor 5770xt really can't cope as it runs out of VRAM and the FPS sucks.

5900x for fusion use and it still be an upgrade for gaming.
Its a nice ipc uplift.

the other option is to go for am5 x3d 16 core version.
From the 3900x it be a huge upgrade both for fusion work and gaming.

Boils down to what kind of experience you want when working/gaming really.

I got the 7800x3d 18 months ago and now with 9800x3d I dont need to buy it as current level is superb.
I can wait until it goes down in price as supply increases.
each cpu upgrade I had been a better experience, the x3d been the best I ever had as it makes games, fluid and smooth
The am5 x3d 16 core system be the best experience both for work and gaming.

I would go for the more expensive one as its key to a better work experience for years to come.
Buy 16 cores for work and enjoy gaming alongside that.

I only game so I dont need 16 cores.
anyone using such programs shouldnt buy 8 core chips really.
Yes it will cost more but down the line it also last longer and amd usually ensure next gen is compatible also..

as fair as im aware the 5700x3d as the same performance as a 7600x, and in heavy work loads that's would match a 5900x..
but i don't know about your specify tasks, there will alwats be out line tasks that just want cores over IPC or cache

but to be fair one your stop gaming at 1080 and move up the 3D cache dose have in inpacket but just not as much and your bound to be limited by the GPU before a CPU.
and in this case there is a lot of AM5 and intel chips that will smash the tasks you want in ever way without buying a 500 flagship cpu

Nothing wrong with doing a quick upgrade now and then doing a full new build in 2025 at some point.
You could sell the 3900x as well, use it to fund most of the new chip so you dont end up spending much.

If you’re going with Nvidia then the absolute most performance per core you can afford. A 5800X and RTX308012gb system offered lower gaming performance to 5700X and RX 7700xt. Upgrading to a 7900X3D put the 3080 back on top.
