'Ryzen 9 5900X' more futureproof then 'Ryzen 7 5800X3D' ?

So currently got the following which I upgraded to about 2.5 - 3 years ago :

- Gigabyte X570 AORUS ELITE
- AMD RYZEN 7 3700X EIGHT CORE 4.4GHZ
- Gigabyte GEFORCE RTX 2070 SUPER WINDFORCE OC
- Patriot Viper Steel 16GB (2x 8GB) 3600MHz DDR4 C17

I now want 'a little upgrade' so am getting some more RAM (32GB Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX Black) and a different GPU next month (probably the 'Gainward GeForce RTX 4070 Ghost 12GB GDDR6X' which was advised in my other thread) but I can't seem to make up my mind about which CPU to go for.

I've read the 'Ryzen 7 5800X3D' is the best for gaming, but the 'Ryzen 9 5900X' has more cores and sounds more 'futureproof'.

I do a fair bit of gaming (GTA V, Faircry 6, Harry Potter, Forza) but also into photography so sorting/organising large amounts of photo's etc, but nothing 'heavy' like video editing though I do like the have various things open/running at the same time (copying photo's, music, Teams meetings powerpoint running etc).

Will I still see a fair difference with the 5900X (and new GPU) over my current 3700X in gaming, or would I have to go for the 5800X3D if I want to see a real difference on my screen (AOC 34" CU34G2X 3440x1440 VA 144Hz) ?

I went from the 3700X to 5800X3D with a 3080TI and have been really happy with it. Everything is smoother with much better minimums. It's no slouch in non-gaming tasks either, i run quite a few VMs for R&D and also photo editting and not had any issues.

I doubt there will be a scenario where the extra cores of the 5900X are more helpful than the cache (for games), before the usefulness of both the X3D and the 5900X expires.

Going beyond 8 cores, 16 threads, in a meaningful way is still pretty rare and you'd know it already.

This.

The current gen consoles are effectively a cut down 3700X.
I am confident that if a 5600X3D existed if would still be excellent.
I recently upgraded from a 5800X to a 5800X3D and it has made a huge difference in Hell Let Loose.

If that felt like an upgrade I wonder how much I will notice it coming from a 3600x :D

Also, I assume my current "Cooler master hyper 212 (120mm) rgb" is still sufficient for this Ryzen 5800X3D CPU yes ?
I think it should be, im using the stock amd prism cooler and getting not bad temps, at stock the highest i got in games was 75c, with a -20 undervolt on all cores using pbo2 tuner its knocked around 10c off the temps with no loss of performance

More cores are good for productivity work like encoding and rendering etc, however the x3d is no slouch either, it just gives you a chance to get some coffee while it chuggs along.

5800x3d for gaming.
Games usually use 1 or 2 cores mainly.
8 cores is the sweetspot for gaming.
more than that we talk work and such not gaming.
Once you go x3d you find your gaming works much better than the 3700x.

can always run the 5800x3d in eco mode if the cooler isnt optimal.

I think you’d have to be running a pretty old game with an Nvidia card. Games have been scaling very well across cores for some time now.

Likely 90% of games use 1 to 2 core solely. (lot of old indie games out there)
its a reason amd boost for example boost 2 cores when gaming.
most games wont need more than 4 cores for optimal playability.
5800x3d is simply superior for gaming and more lasting than the 16 core cpu.

so, your wrong.

90% of games from the pre Mantle era maybe.
