Hi there


Just to help educate a little.

Ryzen is compatible with all current DDR4 memory and officially supports upto 3600MHz.

However the sweet spot is 2400-2666MHz, this speed will work with all mainboards including cheaper options.

3000MHz and above will ONLY work at such frequencies in the flagship mainboards like Asus Crosshair for example and even then the maximum stable speed we achieve with a lot of messing around was 3200MHz, which really makes 3000MHz the maximum speed we advise.

Of course you could buy 3200 or even 3600 kit now, and just run it at a lower frequency with more aggressive CAS Timings and as BIOS updates come out then you might be able to achieve higher frequency.

As such we recommend 2400-3000MHz kits for use with Ryzen, faster kits will work just fine but you might have to run them below the rated speed and just set the memory timings more aggressive.

Like I say the cheaper mainboards are typically good for 2133-2666MHz memory frequency, the higher-end boards will hit around 3000MHz at present.

Yes but so far Asus is delivery the best memory OC ability above 3000MHz, particular Crosshair mainboard.

Any chance if can you confirm if the Avexir Core 2400MHz stuff works OK with Ryzen? I picked up 32GB (2 x 16GB) in preparation a couple of weeks ago.

The Carbon claims to support up to 3200MHz on MSI's site. I suspect that memory compatibility will get a lot better with firmware updates. I know that the Z170 board I had launched in a fairly sorry state in terms of memory, but a few updates later and it handled 64GB of 3333MHz DDR4 without breaking a sweat.

Motherboard manufacturers always make claims, but maxing RAM frequency on all platforms never comes easy.

Will be looking at one of the 16GB 3000/3200 kits I think. The Vengeance White LED kit would look nice in a white/black/grey themed build, might be the boards and firmware improve massively but don't want to risk unstable ram clock issues.

You could buy a 3200 and just run at 3000 for example. RAM can be underclocked just like it can be overclocked.

Of course, just like mine in signature (1600, Kingston). I just don't want any boot issues like I've seen previously! Although it's meant to be supported, my current motherboard just won't boot with high speed DDR3, bought some previously and had to return it because it was too temperamental!

Keep swapping between the 3000 and 3200 kit though
The 3200 MIGHT go tighter if I run 3000...but completely luck of the draw.

Planning to go for a White theme with sub black/grey colours...AKA Stormtrooper build

Actually 3000 and 3200 kits tend to be identical IC, they just change the label from say 3000C15 to 3200C16

Given zen is dual channel, do you suggest 2*16gb or 4*8gb for those wanting 32gb total at say 3000mhz? Will filling all slots be less stable at higher rated speeds?

Best overclocking will come with 2x4GB modules.

2x8 or 4x4 is around same OC performance, as such we still have some 4x4 kits pretty cheap as old stock.

There will be nothing. Lowest profile stuff we do is Kingston Fury and Corsair Vengeance LPX.

It will work but you will need to setup the memory manual in the BIOS, so set it at 3000MHz, set basic cas timings and set voltage to 1.35v. See how it goes, if it does not run drop to 2400MHz and work up from there, though the Asrock's are performing very well indeed. They are like the wolf in sheeps clothing.

Yes that RAM will work fine, DDR4 is DDR4, it will work. There is no such thing as AMD or Intel specific RAM, that is always just marketing BS. Any DDR4 will work.

A comment from Asus:

"
I’ve decided to provide some recommendations on DDR4 limitations concerning AM4 currently.

As it stands the AMD code has restricted RAM tuning options which means many RAM kits at launch will not be compatible. This is the same for our competitors also.
What we recommend is the following:
If fully populating a system with 4 DIMMs (2DPC), use memory up to a max of 2400MHz.
If using 1DPC (2 DIMMs) ensure they are installed in A2/B2 and use memory up to max of 3200MHz.

The indication I have received from HQ is that AMD has focused all their efforts on CPU performance so far and will release updated code in 1~2 months when we expect improved DDR4 compatibility and performance."


In short if filling all 4 DIMM's set your speed to 2400MHz and work up from there.
If using 2 DIMM's put them in the A2/B2 slots and a max of 3200MHz should be possible.

In our testing only the Crosshair board achieved 3000-3200MHz, the others were in the 2400-2666MHz range.

BIOS updates will come!

I don't think its really surprising. Memory code isn't fully optimised, performance will get better. If you've ever looked at Mobo BIOS updates, got to say increased memory compatibility and performance is a pretty common note!

Ryzen is coming out the doors gun blazing, and will likely improve with mobo bios improvements and microcode updates. WHat you should take from this is performance will only get better as what we've seen so far will be within limits of what is currently available, not any compatibilty/performance improvements that might come out 6 months down the line!

Memory optimisation/compatibility still to come. If the chip does this well now at typically sub 3000Mhz, how much will it gain when its able to use higher speeds reliably? This is all something we don't know, AMD64/AthlonXP etc gained from tight timings and better memory, and had the same lead architect as this design so the same possibilities wouldnt be out the question!

Intel same issues in past.

Also we find that 3000C14 performance just as well as say 3733C18, on Intel, but it is also programme dependent, some programmes like raw MHz RAM speed and others prefer tighter latencies. On AM4 I'd be aiming for 2666-3000 with the lowest possible latency I could achieve, so buying 3000-3200 kits will be good because you can run them slower but tighten the latencies.

Indeed. From what you've seen so far, have you noticed much in the way of performance differences going from 2400-> 3000 on the Ryzen systems you have seen tested? Curious as to how this architecture will scale to memory speed.

Will you be getting more low-latency DDR4 in?

We won't be stocking more DDR4 no, because its all the bloody same these days bar heatspreader design.

3000 kits give good versatility, drop the MHz for latency, up the MHz and loosen the timings.

Memory has little impact on performance, just like with Intel, it is just something the extreme benchmarkers focus on or corporate users doing intense encoding where faster memory clock might shave a few seconds off encoding time which if your business depends on that it becomes important. But for every day users someone running 2400MHz or 3200MHz you would never notice as an every day user or gamer, likewise on an Intel platform too. Especially if say the 2400 kit is at C10-C12 and the 3200 kit is at C15-C17.

I'd not get to worried about memory frequency guys!
