at home, you?
anyone know if you need a specific board to run one of these? i have one in work but im not sure exactly what i would need to run it, all i know is that they run at a very high speed, so if anyone could help in telling me it would be appreciated, thanks.

You will need an SAS controller card.
SSD's are faster.

SATA drives are compatible with SAS cards, but not the other way around.

The 15k RPM drives are indeed very fast, however for desktop use they aren't worth it. The reason being the firmware tends to be optimised for server applications and reliability rather than straight transfer rates which is what a desktop wants.

I got one from work too and I went and got a cheapo controller card. I must say I was extremely dissapointed in the speed (and the NOISE) of the thing. Even if you get one for free it isnt worth spending money on the controller card.

To get the best out of them you'd have to spend a lot on a decent controller card, which can cost the same as decent SSD's so basicly for home SSD would be better.

I have 2x Fujitsu 15k drives in RAID-0 on a Dell Perc 5/i Raid Card, the access time is phenomenal and I am nearly always the first person in the game on a TF2 map change :p

If you watch the flea-bay sometimes you can get lucky and pick up a cheap Dell Raid Card, they can also be used with normal SATA drives as well as SAS drives.

Also making use of the perc and considering they can be got for around £75 they aren't so bad. I'd still save the cash/sell the SAS and buy an SSD tbh.

I run two off my motherboard controller in raid 1 not really fast and very nosie but its running in my fileserver

there is a sas controller on the members market too but you wont bet access to that yet they can be picked up cheap the dell ones are great and would be ideal for you and would be cheaper than a 120gb ssd even 2nd hand
